PS4 and Xbox One News

Hey all will try and keep this thread updated with any new information I see about the upcoming systems!

This first Info covers what we know about the PS4. Pulled from GameFaqs website

Specifics

The Release Date
All we know about the release date so far is that it is coming out "Holiday 2013". Some of the games releasing for the PS4 (not exclusively) are due for October, so we would expect a November release. This will be the worldwide release date.

The Price
$399 USD
399 Euro
349 Pounds
Games will be anywhere from free to $60
Playstation Plus will be required to play online multiplayer. Other services such as Netflix will not require the additional fee. PS+ can be bought for $50/year or $17/ three months (TBC for PS4).

Backwards Compatible?
Yes. Available in 2014 Gaikai (own section) will allow PS3 backwards compatability.

DRM
The PS4 will not feature any sort of DRM. Any online passes will still be available for the developer/publisher to provide. There is no "always-on" internet connection either, except for those games that require it (think Dust 514 and MAG).

The Hardware and Specs
The first thing we notice is that the PS4 comes with a new controller and a new rendition of the Playstation Eye. They will have their own section in this FAQ.

The new PS4 features a stacked parallelogram shape.

The Playstation 4 features an AMD 8-core Jaguar x86/64 CPU. It is said to run right around 1.6ghz. It also features a Radeon GPU comparable to the 7850. Currently it has a 6x Bluray drive (read only) as well as the capabilities to read DVD and CD. It will also include the now standard USB 3.0 Bluetooth 2.1 and Gigabit Ethernet Port. The next section is about the included RAM.

RAM?
The PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5. What does that even mean? First it needs to be clarified that DDR is not the highly acclaimed Dance Dance Revolution. It stands for Double Data Rate. It is comparable to DDR3. Right now GDDR5 is the fastest available RAM on the market, and it's main use is for applications that require high bandwidth (memory bandwidth). It is needed for the new features to help reduce "lag".

In all it is just a new (to consoles) type of fast RAM that will improve certain functions.
It should be noted that I just found this: "Sony has revealed that you will be able to power down the PS4 mid-game and then switch it on again in seconds and pick up right where you left off." Which is enabled by the new RAM.

The Controller
Physical features
The new Dualshock controller will feature everything from the Dualshock 3 with a few changes. The width of the controller has been changed to accommodate the new touchpad in the middle (not a touchscreen), as well as to fix complaints about "touching thumbs" on the analog sticks. The new analog sticks are now concave like the Xbox controller and feature a smaller dead zone. In addition to those, the triggers have been changed to respond better and prevent sliding off. A speaker has been added just below the touch pad for "immersive gaming experiences" (for more sounds) and they have done away with our start and select buttons. The start and select buttons have been replaced with "options", "share", and the clickable touch pad. Finally, there is a light bar on the back, 3.5mm jack on the front, and the Mini USB has been replaced with Micro USB.

Share Button and "Light Bar"
The share button adds a new dimension to gaming by giving you the ability to record videos and take screenshots at the push of a button and upload them to facebook. There is a live message feed that goes with this. The share button will also allow a new feature dubbed Director Mode. Director Mode allows you to give control of your game over to a friend, and they will be able to beat a level for you. The specifics on director mode are not yet confirmed (time limits?).

The Light Bar adds move to your controller. Each player in the room has a different color on their light bar (red, blue, green, pink). The main focus on this is for tracking player position around the room, so if you pass the controllers during split screen then the screens will switch places.

The Eye Camera
Well, it looks neat. It is more like the Playstation Eyes now (haha) because it has two cameras. The Extra cameras allow for Sony to fix problems with motion tracking that they've had since 2002 like depth and multiple players.

The camera is not included in price.

Remote Play
The Playstation Vita will now be able to play almost all of your PS4 games! It is a new hardware feature in the PS4 that allows you to stream your PS4 game to the Vita. Remote Play works by downscaling the 1080p framebuffer to the Vita's native 960x544 resolution, using the PS4's in-built hardware h.264 video encoder to compress the image. This is then beamed out over WiFi to the Vita, which decodes the video and sends back controller inputs to the PlayStation 4. It is no longer something that developers have to labor away at just to make Sony happy. Any controls will be emulated onto the Vita and its touchpad unless the developer does decide to make custom controls. Other feautures will work much like PS3 remote play.

The New Operating System
It looks like a blue version of the Xbox 360/One operating system. Which looks a lot like Windows 8. There is a new social integration of the operating system that allows for twitter and facebook posts/ friends/ videos/ and pictures to be viewed as well as sent. Based on the games you play, much like the google search software, the PS4 will start customizing your home screen with games and videos it thinks you would like to see. It is part of the "reduce downloads times" campaign. Which brings us to my next section.

Gaikai
Gaikai has been integrated into the playstation hardware and software to help reduce the time you are waiting to play games. With the new store system you will be able to download part of the game and Gaikai will slowly stream the rest of the game to you eventually having the full game downloaded to your hard drive. Basically Gaikai reduces the wall between you and digital games.

Cloud Service available in 2014. Allows PS3 BC.

Media Services
Sony Entertainment Programming is a new video and music streaming surface under one Sony application. Most likely this will be the 4k movie service that was announced. Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited are still available and accessible day 1. Netflix, Flixster, and Redbox will be other apps that are supported under media services.

Other Stuff
4k: Yes 4k resolution will be available for the PS4. It will be available for movies and everything else, but right now 4k movies are around 100GB of data. Sony is looking into a 4k movie service for the PS4 that will probably implement Gaiakai. No games will be played in 4k resolution.

Backwards Compatability: It is possible to stream games with Gaikai to the PS4, but nothing will be native. Sony is looking into using Gaikai to solve the problem.

Playstation Move: Yes it is still around.

Instant On Feature: As explained in the RAM section, the PS4 will boot up in 5 seconds and you will be able to start off where you left off. No more leaving your console on because you can't find a save point.

Sony stuff compatability: They've said that TVs, headsets, tablets, and phones will have some roll to play in the system.

Cross-game-chat: Yes.

PS+: Yes, carries over from PS3 and Vita. Driveclub (PS+ edition) is the first game available for the Instant Game Collection service, as well as 3 others monthly.

PSN Account: It transfers over and you have the option of displaying your real name through social media integration.

This is the standard contents of an Xbox One package (note the lack of headset):

- Xbox One console with 500GB hard drive
- Blu-ray drive and Wi-Fi included in console
- Kinect peripheral
- Xbox One Wireless Controller
- 14-day trial of Xbox Live Gold

The Controller
Impulse Triggers - Xbox One has four vibration motors - one behind each trigger and one in each grip - providing precise haptic feedback to your fingertips. The idea is that it gives gamers a sense of "in-game directionality and depth" adding to the immersion in a game, bringing gunshots, crashes and explosions to life.

Higher Quality Headset Audio - Microsoft has improved the data transfer rate between the controller and console, enabling higher fidelity audio in communication headsets. In-game chat over Xbox Live, according to the team, will be in many cases clearer than talking on a phone.

Revamped Thumbsticks - Built for precision and comfort, the controller's analogue sticks are smaller and outlined with 'knurled' (bobbly) texture to improve grip. They require 25% less force to move (ha!) and the centre deadzone has been reduced.

New D-Pad - A cross-shaped d-pad replaces the old design, with more precision and tactile feedback for sports and fighting games in particular. Sweeping movements and combinations should be much easier to input.

Better Buttons - The controller's face buttons have been lower to the controller and have tighter spacing, which apparently makes the transition between each button smoother. They also look nicer thans to a three-step manufacturing process, and the Xbox guide button has moved to make the new view and menu buttons more accessible.

Seamless Connectivity - Invisible reflective technology and LEDs send a patterned infrared signal to your console and Kinect sensor, making the pairing between devices seamless. Kinect can associate the controller with whoever is holding it, meaning switching positions is monitored for local split-screen games et al.

Low Power State – Step away from the TV or the controller and it'll enter a low power state to conserve your battery. Pick it up again and it'll be immediately ready to use without having to resynchonise with your console.

Refined for Comfort - Apparently, the controller's ergonomic design has been honed to the closest tenth of a millimetre to ensure that it's as comfortable as it can possibly be in your hands. It's been tested across a broad age group making it suitable for all ages.

Angled Triggers and Bumpers - The triggers and bumpers have been carefully designed for performance and comfort. The specific angling allows for a natural fit for your fingers, and the triggers require a lighter pull, so squeezing it repeatedly is an easier and more precise action.

Internal Battery Cavity - The compartment that houses the controller's AA batteries is built into the interior of the controller, providing more room at the bottom for your fingers to grip. The controller is both wireless and wired, so you can plug it into your console with a mini USB cable and the connection automatically switches to preserve battery life. Presumably, you'll have to buy separate rechargeable battery packs.
Wireless

Kinect 2.0
250,000-Pixel Infrared Depth Sensor
1080p HD Camera
30 FPS
Greater Field of Vision and Light Intake
Noise-Isolating Multimicrophone
Will come packaged with the Xbox One console and is required to be connected at all times. (This does not mean you need to always use it)
The Kinect can remain in a standby mode when the console isn't on to allow for voice commands to activate the console.
There will be options to turn the Kinect to privacy mode so it won't "spy" on you.
Kinect 2.0 will not require as much room as the current gen Kinect to function efficiently and promises to be a much simpler user experience.
Allows for six people to use the Kinect at once.
Has a higher resolution along with improved accuracy for motions and voice inputs.

Release Date
November 2013 (21 Markets around the World)

Price
$499.00
£429.00
€499.00
$599.00 (AUS)
4490 SEK (Sweden)

Pre-Ordering - Use this thread to discuss pre-ordering or find a location that will work for you.

Backwards Compatibility - The Xbox One will not be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games, both physical and digital. This is due to the different hardware architecture and is not something that will have a future work-around.

Cross-Platform Play - The Xbox 360 and Xbox One will not share multiplayer experiences. You will not be able to play Call of Duty: Ghosts (for example) on your Xbox One, and be in the same match as your friend who owns the game for the Xbox 360. The two consoles run on different chip sets and will have their own multiplayer communities.

Xbox Live - Your current Xbox Live subscription will carry across to the Xbox One along with your profile. There is still no confirmation on pricing, subscription options or features. It has been revealed that the Xbox One will have a Smart Match System for multiplayer but the details haven't been revealed. It has been implied but not confirmed that the family size has increased from 4 to 10. If one Gold LIVE profile exists on an Xbox One, every profile on that Xbox One has access to all Gold LIVE features, including matchmaking.

Major Nelson blog entry on Smart Match and Reputation.

Party chat is increasing from 8 to 32 on both the Xbox One and the Xbox 360. However, users will NOT be able to chat cross platform, nor will this feature be added down the road.

The size of your friends list will increase from 100 to 1000. Currently there is no information available on whether there will be the ability to tag or group friends.

Microsoft Points - MSP will be abandoned with the new console, instead opting to sell everything in local currency. Your balance of MSP will be translated into local currency for use on the Xbox One.

Headsets - The Xbox One does not ship with a headset; it must be purchased as an accessory. There is no backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 headsets, although adapters can be purchased. Turtle Beach in particular is trumpeting an adapter for their existing Xbox 360 headsets that will enable them to function with the Xbox One, and has come out with at least two Xbox One specific headsets. Note however this IGN article, which talks about the restrictions. There is an official adapter allegedly in the works as well.

Internet Connection - An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Region Locking
The Xbox One will not be region locked, so there should no longer be a need to import consoles from other countries. http://www.xbox360achievements.org/n...-Policies.html

Games
Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

Microsoft has revealed the Xbox One will receive 15 Exclusives in its first year, including 8 new franchises.

Microsoft has revealed investing $1 Billion in Xbox One exclusives.
In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today.
Physical copies will not be required to be installed to the Xbox One console. The disc will be required to be in your disc tray when playing the game.

Anyone can play your games on your console once they are installed, regardless of whether they are signed in or not. [not sure yet if this has been affected by the announcement MS made on 19-June-13]
There will be no region locking. All XBOX ONE games will work in all XBOX ONE consoles.

Interesting Reads about RAM pertaining to both systems:

Up until this point it was assumed that the PS4 would be able to use all of it's 8GB GDDR5 RAM for Gaming. This was said to be false and lead into an entire rumor fueled arguement which summed up said that 3.5GB of that RAM was actually dedicated to the Operating system while leave 4.5GB for gaming. This was later commented on by The president of Vblanks Entertainment, a developer.

Info can be seen here. We have yet to hear from an actual Sony Developer on the statement: http://gematsu.com/2013/07/rumor-upd...-5gb-ram-games

As far as the Xbox Goes From the start Microsoft had said that 3GB would be used for the OS and 5GB for Games. What people may not have realized is that the Xbox One comes with Three OSs. One for Games, One for the Windows OS, and the third was used for switching between the other two OSs, called a HyperVisor. Speculation says that with the use of this Hypervisor a theoretical amount of 7.5 GB can be used for the Gaming on the XBOX ONE. Article : http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/xbox...hat-i-1437760/

Here's some things you can add.

Backwards Compatible?
Yes. Available in 2014 Gaikai (own section) will allow PS3 backwards compatibility (You misspelled compatibility).

Gaikai will actually eventually allow the PS4 to be PS1, PS2 and PS3 backwards compatible. Gaikai will be implemented in stages and at the launch of Gaikai, it will only allow select PS3 backwards compatibility.

Ram
Sony cleared up a little confusion on the Ram allocation. Games will have access 4.5 gigs of direct ram and 1 gig of flexible ram allowing games to have access to a max of 5.5 gigs with the remaining used by the OS. Here are the definitions Sony gave;

""Direct Memory" is memory allocated under the traditional video game model, so the game controls all aspects of its allocation

"Flexible Memory" is memory managed by the PS4 OS on the game's behalf, and allows games to use some very nice FreeBSD virtual memory functionality. However this memory is 100 per cent the game's memory, and is never used by the OS, and as it is the game's memory it should be easy for every developer to use it. "

Recording
The PS4 will be able to record up to 15 mins of video at a single time.

The Xbox 1 will be able to record up to 5 mins of video at a single time.

Friends list
Both systems have increased the max limit of the friends list (the PS3 and 360's limit was 100). The PS4 limit is 2,000 and the Xbox 1 limit is 1,000. But seriously who has that many friends anyway?

HDD's
The PS4 uses 2.5" laptop hard drives and can be swapped out.

The Xbox 1 can not be swapped out or removed (already mentioned in the op. Oops didn't see it.)

Now for a bit of trivia, the PS4 is actually a different color than the PS3. I always thought black is black but apparently not.

Not sure how much truth there is to this article bit it lists the xbox one release date as Nov. 29th and the PS4 release date as December 13th. http://news.yahoo.com/xbox-one-repor...163057316.html

There is no truth in it. Cmon look at what they are using for their source, the Toys'R US Preorder dates. I can link you multiple sites that have the PS4 shipping on Nov 13 and the Xbox 1 as Nov 29 and others listing them both as shipping Dec 31. Using their logic, since I have multiple stores saying this, then it must be true.

Neither company has announced the release date yet. Sony will announce the PS4 release date at Gamecom in Germany which is being held between Aug 22-24. It is unknown when Microsoft will announce their but my guess is at the same convention since it is the last big convention this year. Both consoles will come out the first 2 weeks of Nov, we just don't know what date yet.
