Congrats!! Enjoy the trip! I guarantee your son will remember it for the rest of his life!! I did a similar trip with my dad in 2000, we flew to San Fran to pick up a not so cool truck from my grandpa. I remember every single minute of that trip, best of all was the time spent with my dad and the 1500 miles of just talking! You get to do it with an amazing car!

Good for you, sharing this with your son. Becky has been amazingly helpful on the forum. I believe I'll buy my next car from her and fly in as you did. Safe travels, and share pics with us.

It's not often that your dad takes you out of school so the two of you can go pick up an iconic American muscle car ... in Detroit.

Excited doesn't begin to describe the feeling right now. Hope I can sleep tonight. I doubt anyone would care, but if anyone wants the play-by-play on the trip, follow me @Billy10mm (Twitter). Will put up a blog post about the trip on my website once I get back. And for the record, Becky has made this by far, by so VERY VERY far, the easiest and most delightful car buying experience in my 37 short years.

Congrats man! That is awesome! I almost flew to Elkins in NJ to pick up the car I wanted, but then decided to just order and wait. If I were you...I would pick up the car and head South as fast as you can and get away from Detroit! :o) Just kidding...kinda. LOL Ya, I live in SE MI. There is a LOT to do really if you want to take any time. My biggest recommendation before you leave town would be to hit the Henry Ford Museum. Just a fantastic place to see. Then truly enjoy that drive home and be sure you find the END parking spot at every hotel along the way! :o)

Woodward was the heart of the Detroit muscle car scene and was used for testing back in the day. Today on any warn night it will be packed between 13 mile and 14 mile........Resist the urge to get on it as the cops are in hiding most of the time, but hang out long enough and you will see a hand full of stoplight drag races form just about any car, truck, bike...

If you come to Detroit to buy a muscle car.......Take it to Woodward.

From the dealership take I75 North to 696 West. The second exit on 696 is Woodward....Take it north and the roads are in numerical order 11 mile, 12 mile, 13,14, 15 (aka Maple) 16 (aka Big Beaver)...

From an article in HOT ROD magazine.

Woodward Avenue holds a special place in the hearts of all Detroit motorheads. For more than 60 years it has been the revered stretch of road where people met and cars raced. Its long open stretches begged for acceleration. Its unique mom and pop drive-ins served good food and became the ideal hangouts for those looking for a street race, to meet old friends, or make new ones. Woodward’s version of the card-up-the-sleeve trick was the factory-prepped cars. These test mules preyed on the unsuspecting with next year’s optional engines wrapped in the current year’s bodies: the 1968 Road Runner with 383 badging and a 440 Six Pack under the hood, or the total sleeper nondescript Chevy sedan with an all-aluminum big-block. Every manufacturer’s experimental garage was staffed with young engineers who knew what Woodward was all about and wanted to use their company’s resources to have fun.

While the factory- and dealer-prepped cars were the fastest, the average guy did his best hopping up an older car or saving enough money to put down on a new muscle car. And because the nation’s economy was good through most of the ’60s, a lot of Detroit’s young men bought muscle cars. Even if he bought the car strictly for its image, the owner would never pass up a quick go from a Woodward stoplight.

There is nothing special about Woodward on a weekday basis...just another bumpy road. Take it during the summer time somewhere around the Dream Cruise time and it is awesome. Any other time of year, just another road. Go see the Henry Ford!
