Most important tools to own?
I am new to working on cars, so I want to start my collection of tools that I need for when I work on my car or just do some car maintenance. What is the most important tool(s) to own??

Standard and deep socket sets, some extensions for the sockets, wrenches, torque wrench, good screwdriver set. A good jack and some jack stands. I have ramps but rarely use them because they don't get the car up far enough for my liking. I'd just do the jack/stands. A good multimeter is dirt cheap and will help you check your battery and finding hot wires.
That's really all you need starting out. It kind of depends what you want to do and what you consider "working on" your car. |

The above plus make sure you get a set of "body tools". They come in sets of 4 to 6 different shapes that look like small plastic pry bars. They are used to take out all the different body clips and to release panels without breaking the clips or marring the panels. They are cheap.
Also - Make sure you get a good quality deep socket for the lug nuts. And make sure the floor jack has a low enough profile to fit under the front of the car.

You'll be advised to buy the best you can afford; that is true to some extent - but, since you are not a professional making $$$ from your tools, you can afford to economize somewhat.

The Craftsman Club at Sears has saved lots of money in the past. Not the best tools, but great warranty and functional. Can't afford Mac or Snap-On for a weekend hobby. Even better, raid the Dad's tool box or find an estate sale. I thought I had a pretty complete set while rebuilding dirt toys, but the Camaro has some odd size metric stuff. More sockets and wrenches are better...
