Carbon Fiber Cloth

Is it the Carbon Fiber Cloth that people put resin on? Is it required to put the resin on? Is that for looks or durability issues only?

Relax, it's needed to harden the CF and protect it.

The resin is for UV stability and protection - I work with these materials as a Marine Protective Coatings Chemist.

A lot of Yachts have masts that are built around a core with Carbon Fiber to make it light weight. The resin is for wear and tear (ropes and such) as well as UV stabillity to prevent it from yellowing over time. A lot of resins look yellow in the can (if you do get some). But dry clear.

My two cents about it.

Cool, I do have a vert so UV is a concern, I was hoping it would be viable to have the look without the glossy. Plus thought maybe it would have a uniqueness to it as well.....looks like Ill have to resin it. thanks yall

You can tecnically use the cloth without the resin if its just for looks..The trick might be getting the cloth to stick to places that contour and arent completely flat..The resin usually holds it down to these places so that it does not come loose..Carbon fiber is made of strands that is weaved together sort of like a wicker basket..Without the resin keeping it all together the fabric could come undone..Lastly the resin acts as a clear coat that makes the piece look glossy matching other carbon fiber pieces..it all depends on the look your going for..
