Don't like the weight? Blame your friendly federal gubment and their boatload of REGULATIONS. In today's GM cars, you could practically drive off a cliff and survive with all of the built-in safety equipment. (stability control, traction control, front/side/head airbag systems, ABS, heavier door beams and rocker panel stiffeners....oh, don't forget about all the electronic crap to monitor and control this stuff. OOOPS, forgot about all of the emissions controls too. Now add power seats, windows, locks, wham-jam stereos and amps, extra sound deadeners...it's freakin ridiculous! But you can smash head-on into a bridge if you want! At least this car has a near perfect 50/50 front/rear weight bias!

Still, other manufacturers have the same requirements, and they're reducing weight. With the exception of Chrysler, GM vehicles have generally been heavier than comparable other cars. Times have not changed.

Edmunds doesn't seem to like the Camaro much however they did say that it drives nicely, so there is hope.

Weight, well consult sig

That explains why cars are heavier than they used to be, but doesn't explain why GM is consistently heavier than just about everyone buy Chrysler.

It's not heavy for the kind of car it's supposed to be. They made a nice phat old school body. Sure they could start chopping materials. Then maybe call it Vette lite? This vehicle is about the look and the moment of that look. The Camaro experiance. Not about an engine with a boat body. They already have a car for that.

Well, mandates are the same for everyone. GM must therefore be making cars which are bigger (which they generally do, but not always) and/or are more reliable/safer/more durable then the competition.

GM is making cars that are more reliable/safer/durable. I'm in the collision industry, I can attest to that. I just wish the old "stigma" of American cars would be history by now, but I guess some folks will just always buy imports.

Fair enough. I guess the crash tests will explain a lot. Given that the Lambda clones just aced theirs, I have high expectations for the Camaro.

Sure the SS Camaro manual is kind of heavy @ 3860#.

But the new SMALL BMW 135i weighs 3400#

The M3 weighs 3700#

My 200hp 141tq Honda Civic Si sedan weighs 2960#.

Cars are heavy because all the new standards and technology.

I will be buying a 2010 Mustang as long as it has the 5.0 in it and keeps the weight down oh and still looks good with the new body work it is getting , but if Ford doesn't deliver what I want then I will live with the 3900+ pounds (for the automatic ) of the Camaro SS and buy one because it is a great car too , with awesome looks , I guess I will decide NOV 19 at the LA auto show when the new STANG is unvealed...

You might want to go put your name on a list at your local chevy dealer then.

There will be no 5.0 in the 2010 mustang.

And like I told you in another thread, that was from April and it's 3rd party info at best...so it actually proves nothing.
