Just came across this article about the next gen. V8 and ecotec production news at the Tonawanda engine plant.

Workers are tearing out equipment from phased-out engine lines to make way for a new V-8 and a next-generation Ecotec engine.

GM’s new V-8 engine line will use technology similar to the new Ecotec line’s, said Mike Fonte, the launch manager. The V-8 is set to begin production in February 2013; equipment for the line will start arriving in September.

I only wonder if this will be the first initial V8 production facility or will there be another engine plant at an earlier date for possible production sooner in the 2012-2013 model year. I would think 1 plant cannot handle both truck and car V8 production rate and I also remember that the trucks are to get (rumor) a dohc version of the next gen. while the cars are due for the ohv version of the V8.

They do now, more or less. At least I think they do. I'm 99% sure that aside from their high performance engines (LS7, LS9, LSA, and hand built LS3 for the Grand Sport), all of their current V8's get built in St Catharines.

We also need to add Saint Catharines engine plant to the list of plants (2 so far) that will be assembling the new engines for 2013 model year which directly supplies the Oshawa assembly plants.

The next generation small block engine family will deliver impressive fuel efficiency through the use of direct injection and an all-new advanced combustion system design. The new engine family will rely exclusively on aluminum engine blocks, which are lighter and contribute to the improved fuel efficiency. In addition to being E85 ethanol capable, these engines are being designed with the capability to meet increasingly stringent criteria emissions standards expected throughout this decade.
