Gull-Wing Doors?

Ok this isn't exactly a convertible topic, but it is roof-related. There's always talk of a Camaro with T-Tops. And I always think that as cool as it would be, I'd probably end up sticking to the traditional sunroof. T-Tops are just kind of a hassle. Taking them off, putting them in the trunk. If it starts to rain, quick find a bridge! But then I was thinking, if the car is built for T-Tops, it shouldn't take much to build gull-wing doors instead of traditional doors. I don't mean as a custom mod, I mean as a factory option. Gull-wing doesn't mean that they open and pivot up slightly. Gull-wing means they open straight up. Think DeLorean.

Aside from the total coolness factor, doors like this would solve one huge problem I have with my camaro. The HUGE doors sing out a MILE. Doors that open straight up will make it much easier to get in and out, since you could open them wide even in tighter space. Just watch your head of course. I would absolutely get a camaro with doors like that, price-permitting of course. Flux-capacitor optional.

Another downside is that you'd lose the sunroof. But they could at least put fixed glass on the "roof" sections of the doors. They could even make them open, so you have two mini sunroofs instead of one big one. Yeah, I'd still do it.

This video is all the convincing anyone should need (convincing that it's a good idea, that is).

(it starts with a whole lot of nothing but once you get to the doors opening, it's pretty awesome. I would love it if my doors opened like that.

One downside I hadn't considered is that if your car rolls-over, you are trapped. Apparently the DeLorean had a windshield designed to be kicked out from the inside in case of a rollover. Fortunately sports cars are not top-heavy. And if you're going fast enough to roll one, you'll probably be too dead to worry about how you're going to exit the vehicle if it rolls and comes to a stop on it's roof.

The latest year of this mercedes has solved the traping issue during roll overs with an explosive charge at the top hinges which will blast the doors of the car, allowing you to escape. As a person who likes to keep cars for a long time, the first image i had in my head was my doors being blown off one day due to a short in the system

All sls's have that feature...and it's not like your thinking. It merely seperates the hinge at the pin....more of an airbag type explosion than what your probably thinking. It mechanically seperates the hinge, not really an explosion. Wiring harnesses and all are designed to easily seperate from the body if this happens. Should they deploy while driving down the road, you would still need to unlatch the doors as if trying to open. They don't actually "blow" off of the car.
