maintenance with aftermarket headers.

just wondering if those of you who have installed aftermarket headers are having to re-tighten the bolts often. I have a 1998 chevy short box reg cab with a 5.7l in it with shorty headers. After so many miles I can hear a ticking under the hood and sure enough it is caused by the header bolts getting loose causing an exhaust leak. Anyone find this is happening often with the camaro?

you could get some stage 8 bolts to take care of that

most any aftermarket header swap will require you to recheck/tighten the header bolts. you could get the stage 8s. which are a little pricey.

I picked up a set of Spectre Lockwire Header Bolts that safety wire themselves and they come with the extension tool to tighten them in cramped conditions.

got them at autozone. have had them on the 94Z for about 3000 miles and have yet to need to retighten them.

they are part #4668 on autozone.com

Use ARP Stainless fasteners. They don't heat cycle, (expand & contract) like the std bolts do. Which is what causes them to loosen over time.

They are bolts that have a lock that you put on them. It stops them from backing off. The last set I bought for my LS1 was around 45.00 if I remember correctly.

Edit: He beat me to it... make sure their "grade 8" as well. You could always just pick up some grade 8 bolts with drilled heads and lockwire em.

sounds pretty decent, 45 bucks isn't bad for never having to listen to an exhaust leak.

why do the aftermarket headers not already come with these "stage 8" bolts?

Am I missing something? Is $45 too steep for a company that sells $1800 headers?

For 1800 bucks they should throw a hooker in the box too. The prices on some of these cars mods is rediculous, I can buy a set of headers and a full exhaust made out of the same materials for my truck for like 800 bucks... and the trucks longer!
