Thanks, that right there clears it up. When I was in college and was taking basic-level ROTC, we drilled with the M1, and had to clean one or two per term. But since the M14's and M16's were too new to be issued for that purpose, nobody ever made the distinction in the ROTC classroom either.

As an aside, I suspect that the term 'clip' in the USA is a hold-over from just before and during WWII. If you read a lot of GI reports and statements from WWII, many use 'clip' to mean 'magazine'. Not all, but a fair percentage.

In the 1937 US Army world, the M1's en bloc clip was a new twist on the familiar 'stripper clip' used on the 1903 rifle but still, a clip. From then on when recruits were trained, whether on the new M1 or on a 1903, everything was clip clip clip.

It seems logical to me that these soldiers naturally kept on using the term 'clip' to mean 'anything that held ammunition that you place into a small arm'. In addition, 'magazine' is such a cumbersome word we use 'mag' today. It's no wonder they sometimes used something easier to spit out, even back then.

I have a Benchmade auto with a safety. I don't know the model, but there are different numbers on either side of the blade. Really nice knife.

When I was in, it was the M16a2 and 203 which is an M16 with a grenade launcher on it. M16 is a work horse.

I have a random collection of Gerbers I've picked up over the years. I pretty much just grab whatever's sitting on the counter on my way out, or whatever's already clipped to my pocket.

Funny note, I had one that was my all time favorite, super comfortable to grip, blade stayed sharp for years. Accidentally walked onto MacDill AFB with it and had to turn it in.

I carry a Cold Steel Swift II. I don't really carry it everyday though. It wouldn't get through security when I go to work. I do carry it when I'm off though.

Man, how things have changed. Up until the security fallout from 9/11, I'd carried a small pocketknife of some description everywhere since I was no more than ten (yup, even in grade school). Back then, it didn't matter to anybody. Now - not quite 60 years later - I have to be careful about places like my township's municipal building - if court or certain other meetings are in progress it's security portals and empty-your-pockets-into-the-basket time and it costs me a trip back to my car.

Just realized something about myself... I'll throw a Kimber in the mud to prove a point, but I won't carry a $400 knife because I'm afraid I'll scratch it

Some of my truck knives... remember the barn scene in Twister?

Cold Steel Kobun 5.5"
Kershaw Speedsafe 3"
Buck 326 Scholar 2"
Gerber Trendy 2" USA?, because it's on my keychain I never forget it, and the quality is excellent. Good for 90% of jobs average folks need done, best toothpick size knife I've ever owned.
