Any issues with buying a former rental?
Still in the market and I found a Used 2012 Chevrolet Camaro LT, Mileage17,332for 23,000. Carfax shows it to be a rental vehicle. Price is right. thoughts?

My previous daily driver prior to my 2012 Camaro was a 2009 Trailblazer which was a rental car. While the car cosmetically had some wear and tear from the renters scuffing the car and what not, the rental agency took decent care of the car and I had absolutely no problems with it. Bought it at 30k miles and traded it in around 70k. Honestly I'd trust a rental car more than I'd trust a leased vehicle.

I have bought a rental vehicle before (96 Dodge Intrepid). the price was low enough that I could justify replacing the traney or a major engine failure and still come out even. But, that was a sedan. Anyone who is going to rent a Camaro will be driving like a bat out of hell! they'd want to see what it can do, I know I sure would. I myself would not go this route. find a used one where it only had one owner, someone who cared about this beast...
my 2 cents...

I bought an '03 Grand Am that was a rental previously, put 100k on it and never had a problem. Get it checked out by a mechanic, and if it's a really good price, go for it; my .02

I say have it checked out and if everything seems good with it, go for it!

Personally, I'd stay away from a former rental. Most of the rental companies do take care of them very well, and you know that they've had services & scheduled maintenance done by the book. But the drivers treat those cars like crap -- especially sports cars, they're "rode hard and put away wet..." And remember that while it's a good guide, a CarFax isn't bulletproof...
If the deal is really good, at least have a reliable mechanic take a look -- do a diagnostic on the engine, etc...

I'd stay away from rental cars like these, people get them to put them to their limits which can't be good for the car if it's done time after time.

Search "rental car abuse" on You Tube and then decide if you want to buy a rental car.

No way I'd buy a sports car that was previously a rental. It's been beat to hell, and you know it. Plus it's usually near the end of its warranty.
That said, that's just me. If the next guy wants to overlook that and get a great deal on the car, well, more power to him. |

I rent three cars a week for business, and I would not touch one with a ten foot pole. Even though I don't abuse the cars, most customers do, AND most employees do as well. They do bare minimum maintenance, and as someone else mentioned, the vehicles tend to have more cosmetic wear on them. You might get lucky, but there are enough nice used Camaro's around that I would keep looking.
PS - I bought a former rental car when I was in college - a 1992 Chevy Corsica with 9,000 miles on it. The transmission lasted another 4,000 miles before it died. |

Its been said that buying a rental car is like looking for a wife in a whore house. Anything that has been driven that hard by that many different people, you dont want it!
