yeah, much less vibration - which makes sense if the u-joint was bad because last year when the stock 12yr-old one went it squeaked coincident with speed & had a vibration, but this one was new and silent. the old one had obviously sticky spots but this one moves freely in my hand. i'm still trying to figure out how the bearing caps that were bolted to the diff came off... the clamps are still there torqued down.
i jacked up the rear end and gave it a bunch of spins both directions - from each tire and from the pinion. all seems normal with the exception of the wheels not counter-turning (open diff) when i spin the other individually... but they both spin the same direction when spun from the pinion (as they should). no noises, no grinds i'm lost

If one bolt wiggles loose then over time can't it cause an inbalance and go from there?
I'm not sure what you mean by bearing caps. |

but after some more reading, i'm considering the possibility of a driveshaft imbalance. but i don't know how or why it'd let go at 45mph or so - most guys that have that happen are spinning their DSs near 6000rpm @ 120-130mph. mine was at about 45mph & 1700ish DS rpm.

Well the good news is it's cheaper than a set of tires and really lucky it dropped off at a stop light.
The front wheel drive had to be fun... |

yeah, and it's really weird having my truck trying to pull the steering wheel straight. i'm used to it in my wife's Corolla, but not Penny...

Well like Mike said, at least you know what the vibration was.

went ahead & bought a new u-joint and put it in (so much for my lifetime warranty from Advance - they ain't got 1 store in this state). seems to be driving alright now, so that must've been it.
and as for the counter-rotation of the open diff, turns out it only does that if the pinion is stationary... which makes sense thinking back on it
