There has been. It always ends the same. Some people want to keep their cars immaculate and only drive them when the temperature is between 80 and 81 F with a humidity between 41 and 43%, and the rest of us realize they're just cars.

This is one of the reasons I lease. I couldn't care less what winter driving does to my car. A good professional detail twice a year keeps it looking new, 2 years of maintenance with a nice warranty... I don't care if it starts having mechanical issues. I'll just lease another one in a year.

Could you please post what you are driving for a winter beater. I'm starting to look now and it's not looking good. They are asking to much for junk. Reliability at a fair price does not exist.

My DD is a 2010 Malibu 3.6. It has about 91k on her right now and have had only minor issues. It is also my winter beater. Looking it up on KBB, it's only worth about 8k.

I will be looking to trade her in sometime in 2017 I think. Looking at a Cruze as her replacement due to my road time.

I run my Camaro year round, but back in the day when I did have a winter beater it was a Saturn SC2. It was the perfect winter/commuter car. Plastic panels that don't rust or dent, front wheel drive, great mileage, very simple and easy to work on. If I was in the market for another winter car it would be an SC2 or Ion.

Newer cars have too much complexity and electronics and cost too much to maintain to justify being a "beater".

My daily driver after I lost my 2011 Dodge Charger from the state police due to retiring after 34yrs of svc last August became a 2007 Honda Element SC. I've this is my third Element and this one had 143K on it when I bought it. It's mine, I own it and all I do is change the oil every 3K. It was great this past winter with no issues whatsoever. Get roughly 25MPG with it and it's comfortable. Could realistically sell it for about $12K and Honda's run forever.

I put snows on my SS because it is my winter beater.

My 2000 Trans Am Firehawk is my summer car.

Last winter, I had 2 days where I preferred not to use my car. I run a car lot, so I do have access to around 40 different vehicles, if I need one!

From someone who drives their camaro through a ton of snow. It handles great in the snow, better than most small suvs, especially with good tires on it. But I did buy a winter car this year on account of the fact that I have some corrosion issues on the camaro, that I want to get fixed properly, but the salt and snow destroy the car. So i will no longer be taking her through the snow. rather enjoy it in the summer, than be mad at what new spot is rusting on it.

Anyway just grabbed a 2006 Equinox for $5000 CAD, if you are handy there are some good options out there. The one i just bought had 123 000km on it, is fully loaded, leather, sunroof etc... and needs brakes and a paint touch up on one door.

If you are on a budget, the best winter car for the price ive found is the 2006 to 2008 pontiac torrent or equinox of those years. The torrents seem to be a bit cheaper but its all about how you shop around. Beware of the head gasket issues on them though, be educated before you shop. But I'm handy and can fix anything it might throw my way down the road, which might not be the best route for yourself.
