I feel your pain OP. I was talking to some people this weekend, and they were discussing how beer makes you poop after drinking (you know the next morning), and I was like "Oh you mean Bud Mud" and they never even heard of that. Was so depressing.

city folks just look at you like you have three heads when i do this. back home they know it could mean cop or deer or some road hazzard for them to slow down and be careful.

I use to do that but SO MANY people drive like FOOLS I let them get the ticket.

It seems like people go 10-15 under or go 10-20 over the speed limit.

After I FINALLY get around somebody CRAWLING doing 10-15 under the limit, I

set my CRUISE to 5 over, then in SECONDS I have somebody RIDING MY REAR.

I CAN'T believe how many FOOLS are on the road.

LET THEM GET THE TICKET I SAY....

Usually too congested around here to pull off the courtesy flash. I try to do it if I'm on the interstate, though.

26 now, but was taught this as I was learning to drive by my father who IS a cop.

I can't remember the last time anyone "flashed" me as a warning. I still do it sometimes. So many cars having DRLs kind of make it pointless or hard to do.

At least people still pull onto the shoulder here (Texas) sometimes to help you pass. But even that habit is dying off.

IMHO it's more than headlight flashing

I believe (I could be wrong), that most drivers today are zombies, and things like courtesy, camaradarie (sp?) are history. Muscle car drivers have maintained some of the good old traditions but for the most part drivers are more into their Ipods etc. than their cars.

Nope. Holds true for us old farts in NY (WESTERN NY). I still do it quite regularly and I'd be more than happy to take some BS equipment violation ticket caused I pissed off the cop vs having no one return the favor and save my ass from a real ticket.

Yes, you are getting old (LOL)! Me too. "I flash them to warn people too about cops, no headlights on at night, bright lights are on, no headlights on in the pouring rain, doesn't do any good, rarely. they're like zombies driving. You can flash, and they have no idea what you're talking about. It's the law in most states to have your head lamps burning when it's raining, definitely in NC. they're oblivious."
I still flash my lights to all oncoming traffic for reasons above. Very few drivers pay attention. Back in the day (old persons speak) I remember July 1970. I was returning to University in Miami from NC, only 3 days after I picked up my new 1970 Nova SS.
At dusk spotted police behind an overpass, opposite lanes, on the interstate in lower Georgia. Started flashing my lights to oncoming traffic as at that time eveyone knew that meant to slow down. To my surprise, within a 1/4 mile, police were also positioned on my side of the road. Police saw me flash lights, I was pulled over, I was not speeding. Harassed on the side of the road for more than 1/2 hour, almost experienced everything except a body cavity search. Did not get a ticket but told to keep driving and not stop in Georgia. Police tailed me about 35 miles all the way to the Georgia/Florida border.
I still flash my lights (quick multiple times) to oncoming interstate traffic if the 'man' is waiting for them. Older drivers know when an oncoming auto does multiple light flashing, means slow down. Sure that I have saved many drivers from tickets since I started this practice in the late 1960s.
Signed,
Old guy who drives fast,
Never had a speeding ticket,
Expecting my first speed ticket driving my 2011 Camaro

I still do it. If pulled over, I'd probably say I accidentally hit the lever instead of the washer.
