28APR11: my Lloyd's mats arrived. Will put in on Friday. My dealer called to let me know the rear glass was delivered and I will drop BUMBLBE off on Monday for the replacement. If that doesn't fix FM reception, then what will.

Update: I pulled my sub and enclosure to get the trunk mat in. I could not get the enclosure back in, too tight a fit. So I put the mat on the ground with the enclosure on it, traced around it with a sharpie, and cut the outline out with a box cutter. Re-installed the sub/enclosure and then the mat went in perfectly. I will take the mat to a flooring store to see if they can edge the cut portion. Bottom line is that the mat looks great.

Pics to follow.

So my issue is the radio, specifically FM reception. The dealer tried a new head unit, no fix. Next was replace the coax cable and FM module, no fix. Latest was replace the rear glass (though the steel wool test was negative), still no fix. There was a GM engineer at the dealer for an unrelated issue on another vehicle and the service manager was going to ask him for help; no word on that yet. Now it turns out the initial head unit check was just that, a check. They simply hooked up a head unit to my wiring to see if that fixed the problem but it did not, so they left the original in. So now my car has new cable, module, and rear glass, but still has the issue of poor FM reception. So back to replace the head unit I guess. One good thing is that the service manager is going to pick up one month of my payment for my troubles; that is very nice of him, as I was not expecting anything. Has anyone had or heard of a similar FM problem?

So thought I would post the cure for my problem. It took the better part of a year and one deployment but it looks like I caused the problem. I installed my sub amp on the trunk side of the rear seat back and there is enough EMF bleed to interfere with the FM. Seat up, poor reception. Seat down, good reception. Looks like Diamond amps may not be FCC compliant? Hope anyone else with this problem may save themselves a lot of trouble, a new coax antenna cable, FM module, and rear glass replacement. The silver lining: the dealer is not charging me for the "warranty" work. Whew.

Update:

Here are pics of my poor dash while the dealer was swapping the head unit in a vain attempt to solve the "problem." I am glad they were good sports.

Thumbs up Sub/Amp/Dynamat Install - June 2010

I time warped because I did not put this in the correct chronological order...sorry. This is a general write up with some lessons learned by a beginner (read: first time) installer. (I am trying to upload pics, but it keeps timing out. Will post next.)

The difficult: I removed the carpeting and trim from the trunk, installed the ******** pigtail, Dynamat, Monster cabling, and Audio Integrations Perfect Enclosure mounts, then put all the trim back in with new trim tabs. This took a few sweaty hours and much low back pain leaning over the trunk deck.

I recommend no rings, watches, or clothing that could booger up your deck. Lay out the cable where you want it before cable tying it in place. Cable loom and ties from Lowe's are your friends!

The easy: I installed the enclosure, speaker, and the grill, then adjusted the sound levels.

The result:

Audio Integrations: Check the AI connections before you screw anything in. Mine were not the best quality and I ended up changing them out. The AI instructions were easy to follow and dead on accurate and the fit is what it says it is, Perfect Fit.

Diamond Sub: The sound quality is great, with more bass than I will ever need. A great improvement over the sub-wooferless configuration.

Diamond Amp: The amp's position on the back of the rear seat has caused FM reception issues, leading me to believe that Diamond may have some shielding and FCC compliance issues. That said, with the seat down, there is much less FM interference. At some point, I will have to relocate the amp to a "flat" position or well away from the rear window.

Bottom Line: If I had to do it again, I may have paid a 20-something at the local stereo shop (Sonus) to do the install and save my back, about 2 gallons of sweat, and drink a beer while watching someone else do the install.

I think that the overall install was pretty good for a complete novice.

20 MAY 2011: picked up the car from the dealer body shop this afternoon. It wad having three scratches on the driver's side sill re-painted and a new sill plate installed. Someone scratched it up while it was at the dealer for the radio (non) issue. QC caught it before I took possession last tome and the great Sue at Corlew Chevy arranged for repaint and new sill plate. I guess the sill plate gets ruined when they remove for paint. While it was in, I had them repaint a chip on the trailing edge of the driver's door where someone opened their door into mine, or vice versa. They had to pull the whole door and my Ghost Armor door handle film and repainted the whole door to get a match. $300 and the door looks good as new. So does the sill.

Stopped at the mall

Why does it seem like some a$$hole in a POS vehicle parks next to me, even when I park well away from every car? So annoying. And they are never around when come back, so I could straight up ask them.

2011 HOT ROD POWER TOUR

The event had a stop in Nashville, so a buddy and I took a drive down. Great turnout, scorching weather, and beautiful cars.

Smile Suspension Update

So on Wednesday, 8 June, I placed my order for another bunch of suspension parts from Pfadt!

Engine Mounts
Street Differential Mounts
Rear Lower Control Arm Bushings
Rear Tie Rod
Rear Upper Control Arm Bushing Kit
Front Lower Control Arm Bushings
Front Trailing Arm Bushing

They should be here Friday. I feel like Christmas in June.

I already have Pfadt coilovers, rear trailing arms, and sub-frame bushings sitting in the garage awaiting the rest of their friends! I only wanted to do a one time suspension upgrade for the major parts. I will probably add sways and a tower brace later, but those are easy.
