there is an example of the pypes cat-back in the exhaust sticky. the only issue is that it also has LT headers which changes the sound quite a bit. I would like to hear some with a CAI only.

Just an fyi, I emailed Pypes asking the difference between the V8 And V6 exhaust and they told me the only difference is the size of the tips, so if you want the bigger tips you can order the V8 exhaust and get the same sound.

There are two Pypes catback videos...unfortunently neither of them is with just the cat-back. One of them has jba shorty headers which usually slighly lowers the sound and adds a bit of "rumble" as compared to the cat-back without it.
The other video mentioned above is the same car, but with LTs, and if you listen to them you will easily notice the big difference.

Click on the link in the 4th post above.
When the page comes up, hit "control F", then type "Pypes". It's the second and third ones. They both have headers so if you just put the cat back on it won't sound exactly like these.

I have to say...v8 LS3 mufflers with new V2 Airaid really sounds great. No drone- and nice deep tone...also a real nice noise at WOT!

New here, but wanted to add a little first hand experience to the conversation.
I just had a Pypes cat-back (SG52) installed on my 1lt V6/6spd. Overall I'd say it's a bit on the loud side with a bit of drone in the 1800-2300 range. The system however does have some great sounds especially on down shifts where you can hear the pops in the exhaust just like a race car. Since the 'maro for me is a semi daily driver I had a second set of short bullet mufflers added where the original muffler sat that cut back on the intensity of the drone and shifted it up in the rpm band some. Probably better than that would be to add some inside the pipe disk inserts or some sort of single chamber muffler. For the price not a bad system, but don't expect it to be drone free or quiet. My two cents. |

thanks and what do you mean by pops shifting gears like a back fire? and is the pypes v6 exhaust a nice deep tone for you or high pitch?

To answer your question in regards to the popping...It's caused by a small amount of unburned fuel burning in the exhaust when the throttle blade closes after coming off the throttle. You hear/see this all the time on bikes/race cars and if you look up the specifics you'll see that it nothing to be really concerned about. Of course if you a running real rich or pipe in something flamable and throw some spark plugs in the tail pipes to the mix you have what the street rod crowd call flame throwers.
As far as the sound the pypes system give it a relatively deep tone at idle and as I said if you added some single chamber mufflers (Flowmaster 10s or similar) where the original mufflers sat and maybe some resonated tips it should get rid of the drone and make it sound deeper on acceleration. I know it's never going to sound like large cubic inch V8, but I think it has a good sound. BTW one of the reasons I bought this system was thought it sounded good on a couple of the clips I was able to find, the price, quality and that they also made a system for the G-body that I'm slowly restoring. Good Luck |

i just finished installing the pypes cat back on my 2lt. was a pain in the but. i only have 2 jack stamds so i equate the dificulty to that. with a hoist it would be much better. it does sound great and i dont have any drone so far. it is quite a bit louder then the stock. i still nedd to do some fine adjustments as it is resting on the tunnel brace and rattles a little. i think i will take it to a shop and have them adjust it properly. when it is all buttoned up i will try to get a sound clip. i have an intake and this exhaust, no headers yet and i know there are a bunch of inquiries to hear it without headers.
