John@Torq, if you get a chance stop at the Camaro Corral that is being organized, intro yourselves. I am sure there will be some attendees that would like to hear some race talk from a crew cheif.

Nope, I only shoot this because Road America is close. This racing is a joke compared to ALMS.

Then why doesn't ALMS rate the same coverage as Grand-Am?

I'm sure NASCAR owning Grand-Am has something to do with that. All the DP cars are just various small blocks, running around in ugly bodywork. It's more of a spec series. There is no true innovation.
The DP cars are painfully slow also. Take Road America as an example. In 2008 the ALMS pole winning time of the Audi R10 was 15 SECONDS faster than the 2011 Daytona Prototype pole winning time. Three years of advancing technology and they are 15 SECONDS SLOWER!!!!!!!!!!! That's ridiculous. The DP cars are so slow that the GT2 cars in ALMS would give them a run for their money. Now you take a look at the GT2 class in ALMS, the M3, the Ferrari 458, the Vette, the Jag, the Flying Lizard Porsche, they all actually look like the car you can buy at your dealer. The Camaro in GT in Grand-AM has decals for headlights!!!!! They are a joke. Daytona may draw a few more fans this year because of the 50th anniversary, but a normal crowd at Daytona can be counted on one hand most of the time, calling it lame would be a compliment. The 24 Hrs. of Le Mans on the other hand has upwards of 300,000 fans on race day EVERY YEAR. The best thing would be a merger, like open wheel finally did, but let the ALMS run the series and get NASCAR the hell out of sports car racing. Unfortunately I don't think that is going to happen. Give me the Audi, and the Peugeots, screw the DP's.

tim, you make some great points, the fun thing is, my friend henry owns a DP riley, but in the offseason he runs a 700HP ls7 in it making it roughly the same power to weight as a LMP car.
I am personally an ALMS fan, my co worker is a Grand Am fan. its 2 different types of racing, i like the ALMS/LM side of every team having a limit with some aspects, but having the ability to design and build differently. it adds excitement to the racing. but i do go to the rolex 24, i have friends that race, and i like the event itself. |
