Rear end making a winding noise and GM bulletin regarding it.

I dont drive my car as often as I want to and after 7 months I have about 4300 miles. I took it in to the dealer to have the oil changed and I mentioned the winding noise in the rear end when I am backing up out of my driveway and turning at the same time. I can hear it going forward and turning as well. I know for sure the tires are not rubbing. The dealer told me he had to order parts that there was a bulletin. Anyone heard of this? I asked him to see the copy of the bulletin, so I can look for myself.

That might be the bulletin for the SS where they put in new seals and fluid. You don't need that done on the ZL1. It is posted in here somewhere if you do a search.

Take it to the dealer they may need to flush the rearend. Mine did the same, they flushed it, refilled it and it went away. Many other people have had the sane problem. They figure some of the lashing compound is responsible.

I thought it may be for the SS also that's why I wanted to see the bulletin and post this. I really don't want them tearing into my rear end.

That bulletin is not for the ZL1, they are different, it has been confirmed here on other threads.

I had mine to the Dealer twice, the first time they replaces the ring and pinion. They said the backlash was off, it was quiet for awhile and the noise came back. Next time they flushed it and refilled and it has been quiet since. Don't know if this is the universal fix but it worked for me. Below is the bulletin.

Subject:Rear Axle Chatter Type Noise on Low Speed Turns (Excluding ZL1)

Models:2010-2012 Chevrolet Camaro (Excluding ZL1)
Equipped with Limited-Slip Differential (RPO G80)

Attention:For 2010 and 2011 vehicles built prior to August 25, 2010, if the chatter noise you are experiencing occurs only in Reverse while making a turn, please review the latest version of PIC5424.

This PI is being revised to add an Attention statement and update the Recommendation/Instructions. Please discard PI0137B.The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern


Some customers may comment on a chatter-type noise from the rear of the vehicle while making low speed turns.
This condition may be caused by a slip/stick of the posi-traction clutch plates. As the plates slip and stick, a jumping or jerking feel occurs, accompanied by a chatter noise.

Recommendation/Instructions

Caution: The rear axle seals must be replaced. The original seals are not compatible with the new fluid.

Replace both rear axle shaft seals with GM P/N 22798805 and drain/refill the rear differential with new fluid, GM P/N 88862624 (in Canada, use P/N 88862625). Refer to the Rear Axle Shaft Seal and Differential Oil Replacement procedures in SI. This fluid includes a limited-slip additive (friction modifier) already added. DO NOT add any limited-slip additive (friction modifier).
Important: Please advise the customer that once the differential fluid has been changed, it may take as long as 805 km (500 miles) for the lubricant to fully penetrate the limited slip clutch plates. During this period some chatter may still be felt on initial startup while making slow turns until the rear differential fluid warms up.

Note: DO NOT re-use the wheel drive shaft nut. Replace with NEW only.

Did this also fix the slight whinning noise that we get when lightly on the throttle at highway speed?

Not winding, but chatter or what ever, I have a knock when I would make a tight turn at low speeds, like backing out of the driveway. I took it to the dealer, this has been a while and since they hadn't worked on a ZL1 yet they got on the hotline. What they came up with, they changed the fluid, was that it was normal until the rear end got warm. So since then I have noticed that once I make it a 1/8 or 1/4 mile down the road it doesn't do it anymore.

I don't know.

Had this issue on my ZL1 - they replaced the rear diff fluid, performed several figure 8s etc and the problem was gone.

That's all that they will need to do with yours too I would imagine

Not true.. If you use the recommended rear diff fluid for the ZL1, it already has the lim slip in it.. I had the same issue.. I bought 3Qt and did the flush in my garage, problem fixed..
