Serpentine belt FELL OFF on Interstate

Anybody else had problems with their belts?

At around 2,000 miles my serpentine belt start squealing when cold. It was replaced under warranty.

At around 4,000 miles it started squealing again. This time the dealer "cleaned" it and it stopped.

Now at around 6,000 miles it FELL OFF while I was driving to work. It had started squealing again a few days ago.

I was driving to work and lost power steering, the charging system warning lights came on and it overheated. I pulled over and called road side assistance who had it towed to the local dealer (not the same one as where I purchased or have had it serviced before).

The tow truck driver looked underneath and noticed a belt just hanging there...

Now I am stuck with a POS HHR loaner for god knows how long....

I am really getting tired of all these issues...

Am I the only one?

Thanks

-JT

First I've heard of any belt issues, but you have warranties, road side assistance and onstar....I know it's a PITA getting it taken care of, but at least there's no monitary loss.
I've got almost 6,000 miles on mine with no issues......what are "all these issues" you speak of?

If it is sqealing it is not tight enough. That would also lead to it falling off. Does not sound like your dealer service shop is very bright.

67, I have also had the rear bumper painted due to peeling paint, the interior carpet was replaced because it was improperly installed, part of the airbag was poking out of the steering wheel cover, the PDIM wont update and I am waiting for a new one, the CEL came on the day after I bought it, that turned out to be an PCM programming issue. And now 3 problems with the belt... I think that covers it. I expected and accepted some bugs but getting stranded on the side of the Interstate waiting an hour for a tow truck is very frustrating.

Scott, hopefully this new dealer has a better service department... I am thinking maybe I should get the Regional Service Rep involved....

I would be sure to have them check all your pulleys and tensioner. Something isn't right - not just the belt itself...

Yeah, your crank pulley or something else could be messed up...

I am guessing the belt tensioner is bad.

you'd think the dealer would have pin-pointed the problem the 2nd time they had to adjust the belt. Good to hear it is getting fixed.

Yeah, you would think so.... Guess I will not be returning to that other dealer. However, I am sure that the fact that it is physically broken made diagnosis easier.

This dealer is much closer to home too.

I had the same squeaking/squealing thing happen to me when I hit 1200 miles and they said that they "cleaned" it. I guess I'll be under the hood tomorrow...

yeah ive honestly NEVER had any LS motored vehicles throw belts (stock LS cars at least lol). ive seen them squeek and squeel, usually a harmonic balancer issue. and seeing as all these cars have had and still have automatic tensioners, im guessing its the balancer. they tend to start wobbling, which will cause an annoying noise, and eventually they throw the belts. ask the LS1 guys- that problem was for anyone and everyone we used to stock shelf loads of balancers

EDIT: almost forgot about the TSB for the gurgling noise... it involves the draining of the coolant, and if any gets on the belt and its not immediately cleaned off, youve got permenant squeek. i guess we will be seeing alot of the noise around here now
