MPG on SS 6 spd manual
I filled up for the first time yesterday and after driving only 124 miles she took 9 gallons of premium gas. Thats just over 13 MPG. Why would the MPG be so low? I'm thinking that perhaps part of the reason is that not having driven a manual tranny in so long, I may have been revving more than I would normally before releasing the clutch. I never stalled it or anything, but I know I was concerned about it, for a while. I excellerated at a pretty good clip most of the time. Occassionaly fast, but most times just aggressive, not leisurely. Will my next tank be better?, I sure hope so, 13 is nowhere near the 18 - 24 its supposed to be getting. BTW I love this beast!

Typically as engines break in the mileage improves.

BTW, I don't have mine yet, but with over 400 lbs of torque, the SS should be able to start out in 1st at an idle, you shouldn't need to rev that much getting started, save the clutch.

Mileage - Verified
Folks:
Okay, admittedly I am an old fogey. Having said that today, I took my beauty on its first field trip. Some members of our club and I went to the Lane Automotive Car Show in Watervliet, MI. today. Now, that is a 284 mile round trip for me. I drove a steady 75-80 virtually the entire distance both ways. (shhhhhh.... not saying when today). Now, attached is a photo of the Economy average from my DIC. It reads 21.8 MPG. Which is interesting since the dealer accidentally put in Regulard Grade Fuel. When I got back I refilled the tank, did the math and ended up with an actual 21.7 mpg. (Pretty darn close to the DIC readout.) Maybe I am out there. I am by no means a "hypermiler." I didn't stand on it ( well maybe a couple of times). But that's pretty damn impressive for a car with around 300 miles on her.

Maybe try plus if you have it. Normally it's just a 50/50 mix from both the Premium and Unleaded tanks.
As far as the 13. Either leadfoot or traffic. If MPG is a big issue get the v6 of course. 300HP will feel like a nice v8. |

Gotta be leadfoot. Brand new SS, how do you not romp on it everytime you're in it?
I can't help but run up the R's in my '68 every time I drive it. Nothing like running up revs in a stickshift car....On the highway, I can get 17 at 60 mph, but around town I'm sure I'm at 12. I don't wanna check it...

I have done alot of reading on this and the LS3/L99 engines start getting their best gas milage around 5000 miles and also the HP is finally realized since the engine will be losened up by then.
So lets see what happens at 5K. |

Are you sure the tank was filled all the way when you got the car ?( the dealer may not have filled it all the way) Fill it up to the top yourself then test it. |

The worst mpg on a tank of gas in our Honda Pilot was the "full tank" provided by the dealer when we bought in new.

LS3 here. had 4 miles on it when we picked it up, drove here 350 miles, got roughly 24.2mpg doing 80 mph when we could, but being stuck in Chicago holiday friday traffic most of the time.
wife drove though, she did a great job.

Did you get that MPG from the DIC ? Or did you fill it up and do the math?

All I can say is if you got 13 you were "enjoying" the car a bit.
The EPA Cycles don't include that type of driving. Normal driving with a mix of city and highway and using the right foot a bit should get you no worse than 16 to 18. On the highway, we got 24 easily with Thor going to Florida. If you feel you were driving in a conservative manner, 13 seems pretty low. And no, I'm not aware of an engine breaking in and getting a huge MPG improvement. It will get better, but not by 3 or 4. Keep in mind you also don't know if your dealer filled the car all the way up. And you may have pumped in an extra gallon just based on how you gas it up. Keep an eye on it for the next tank. I don't think I've seen anything less than 16 with the LS3.
