How do you guys justify a custom tune -vs possible warranty problems?
I've talked to many Camaro owners that have disregarded possible warranty issues and went ahead with custom tunes. I want to get a tune bad and have talked to Livernois about a tune and a change to a 2C cam. I figure a tune would void the warranty so why not do the cam change at the same time, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Everytime I'm in the car I'm thinking about how the car would be with a tune, but I have bad luck when it comes to things breaking.
I have a 2010 2SS/RS/M6 w/ 10K miles. Is there some mileage point I should assume that nothing is going to break in the drivetrain or the engine and just go ahead w/ a tune? How do you guys justify creating a possible warranty issue -vs- getting a tune? I guess the only ones that would be worried about it is if they did a tune and then had a problem that wasn't covered under warranty. I just can't make up my mind to do it now or wait until my warrranty expires and am looking for someone to give me a reason to do it now. Russ |

For some it's all about sound, some it's the performance. Either way, it is way to subjective for anyone to convince you either way or another. It would really suck if you needed warranty work done and the dealer denied you. I actually lifters fail and needed a camshaft replaced, and the dealer still did it despite having a dyno tune.
I guess the only reasonable thing to ask yourself is, are you satisfied with the car until your warranty is up, and if not, are you willing to deal with something if it happens. Personally, I love the car after the tune and everything I have done so far.

Do it if you have the cash and willing to pay for problem on parts/labor that are no longer covered under the new car warranty. Oh yeah, guaranteed you gonna need something fixed sooner than later. But if you plan to whine and complain later why GM won't cover your powertrain warranty, don't do it.

There is a big difference between having the money -vs- wanting to spend the money if something breaks. I rarely drive the car aggressively so it's not like I beat the hell out of it, but there is always a chance something major can happen.
barnesql- that is very shocking that GM covered your bo-bo's, your dealer must have found a loophole or something to get approved. For the record....if I break something while driving like a moron I wouldn't whine to my dealer. Russ |

The way I see it, 1)the closest dealer to me is a 2-1/2 hour drive away 2) The warranty is a joke in that the dealer will try every angle possible not to cover/fix the issue (Some dealers-not all) And 3) As aewsome as these cars are, there is always room for improvement and alot of us 5th gen owners who do chose to mod our rides have at one point or another owned an older modified musclecar that did not have a warranty back then either,so it doesnt really bother us.
That being said (my 2 cents), the smart money says "Go with what you can afford."

I put headers/exhaust +tune on mine and well worth it. I waited until about 5000 miles or something like, more like after the big road trip to the first Camaro5Fest. Well worth it. Made it a new animal.

I was worried about it, got the tune, and I'm happier for it.

I agree with above post. I bought my car used in dec. That night put money down to buy the parts for cam header intake tune. In just don't want a car like everyone else has. So if the motor blows or what not I will just upgrade to a better performance part.
