When is a L99 no longer considered a L99

Ok I got to thinking. I know my opinion on the matter, but wanted to know what the 5th gen community's opinion was.

We seems we have unofficially divided a lot of the 1/4 records between ls3/l99 (or manual/automatic if you will). This is because of the L99's "limp leg" known as DOD/AFM, and it's lower stock horsepower, even though any seasoned drag racer will tell you an automatic is faster than a manual if the cars are exactly the same.

SO

With more and more people, with L99s, doing the LS3 conversion, we must ask.... does doing the LS3 conversion make a L99 a LS3? In doing so, should (for instance) a L99 (with the LS3 conversion) be allowed to hold a "L99 record".

I believe that

A)we shouldn't seperate L99/LS3 records

but if we do:

B)a L99 with a LS3 conversion, SHOULD be considered an LS3, and should not be able to hold a L99 record, because it has taken away the difference between a L99 and LS3. That's like someone with a LS3 doing a auto swap and claiming a L99 record.

It doesn't matter, I'm taking all the records.. But I would say as soon as you do away with the DOD,VVT stuff you're no longer and L99. Isn't that what makes an L99 so? I would consider my car now an LS3. Its just an LS3 with an automatic so technically it has its own class. I'll just race myself.

Hey, way to open a can of worms! This should get interesting.

Um, was that last part meant for me? Man, I listen to you and go right for the 2" headers and this is what I get, jeez.

I say its still an L99

If you put a bigger cam in or bore it out or port and polish an L99 is it not still technically an L99?

The only record you are holding, once I put my car back together is the "Slower than danhr" record

well now if that was true, why would I want to combine the "unofficial L99/LS3" class. I love more competition. Gives me more of an excuse to build my car up even more and not have my g/f yell at me.

Is the L99 not a modified LS3 for AFM? So if you converted the L99 to a LS3, how could that be considered anything but a LS3?

Hey, I have no problem being singled out, at least its for something gd! I think its a pretty gd question. It'll get real interesting when all the heavy hitters get involved, or they may not even care in the class that they're in.

Exactly! Now I have the car that GM should have offered. The LS3 Auto, like the corvette. Now it ended up costing about the same, but at least I have a blower.

not so fast, peppy.
everybody is forgetting the compression ratio's are not the same between the two engines.
if you modify the L99 by changing cams, its still an L99, just with an Ls3 cam.
if you increase compression ratio to match an Ls3, you now have an L99 with higher compression.

an L99 will always be an L99.

That for the eduaction old timer. I scratched my name into your headers today so I'll always be on your mind!

I assumed that the vvt/dod stuff was the only difference. I never thought about the compression. So now what do I say I have...A cammed L99 without VVT? Thats sounds pretty gay to me.

actually, it has been proven by scientific research that the owners of true Ls3's have larger sex organs than the owners of L99's.
