LS3 surging
I've had my 2012 2SS/RS, LS3 for appx a week now and I just noticed the other morning that after I pulled out of my driveway that it was surging slightly while going slowly. The next day my wife told me that she noticed it as well. Is this normal with the LS3, because we didnt notice any surging with the L-99, A6 vert that we had? It has only done it on cold mornings. It has never done it when the vehicle is well warmed up after being driven a while of if the temps outside are much warmer.

it happens with mine, nothing crazy. like you said, only when the engine is cold...i dont believe its anything to be worried about, just the LS3 chugging through its immense horsepower =)

No,..... it dont do it when the clutch is engaged, just when it cold and cruising at very slow speeds. Never later in the day when its warm outside or after the engine has warmed up. It didnt seem like such a big deal but I just wanted to see if I was alone with this issue or not.

a lot of car's do that..... most car's idle higher when cold.... its just trying to idle up, the bigger the engine, the more metal there is to have to heat up.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's just the fact that it doesn't like to idle low at slow speeds. I wouldn't be too concerned about it if I were you.

Let it warm up and get to operating temp. Mine does it unless I let it warm up.

I wonder if this has anything to do with closed loop vs. open loop operation of the ECU?
Quoted from another site: "Open loop. This is when the engine runs with out useing its sensors, like the O2 sensor. It runs in open loop when cold at startup because some things dont work untill warm(O2 sensor!). When running in open loop. You engine runs inefficiently and has less power. Its also hard to pass emissions tests in open loop. basically, when running in open loop, you engine is running "dumb" its just running off of a pre-determined script not really useing any of the functions of the computer. Just like a carbureted engine. This is also your engines "limp mode". Closed loop is when the engine is warm and useing all its functions and sensors. Making it the efficient, powerful engine that it is." So perhaps the engine is in "dumb mode" when cold and thus the surging occurs as the load shifts (bucking)? I dunno...just thinking aloud.

love. my. car.
|
mine does it when it's warm at around 8 mph with the clutch fully engaged.... mmm cam lope...
But seriously, it's normal. The car will do it when its warm as well when you find that "sweet spot" It's because the LS3 cam is more aggressive than the L99 cam
