I was watching Horsepower TV on Spike this morning. And the guys bought an LS3 crate motor and I think all they did was put shorty headers on it, or different exhuast manifolds and instead of the stock 426bhp & ~415tq (at the engine) they make stock.
It made like ~495hp at 6300 rpms!

Damn, no wonder you Camaro guys are running great stock 1/4 mile times!

Crate engines frequently have a hotter cam and other differences between a "production" LS3. For instance..the 392 crate engine produced by Mopar churns out 525 HP..but that engine is race only and would never pass emissions.

I dont think the regular LS3 crate engine is any different. I think they sell them just the way they come from the factory....same HP rating as well.

Maybe it had shorty headers, no accessories, possibly different type of engine dyno/way they rate the hp is different from SAE...who knows.

BTW....nice 1/4 mile times tomcat. I will be going to test and tune this year at Milan. Just hoping I can get into the 12's with my car....if I cant that will pretty much mean I suck at driving unless it is 110 outside.

Time to get some slicks.

True....but the car is mostly just a daily driver...so I doubt I will run slicks.

The car still gets some decent traction actually. I haven't done any really hard launches...but it will still hook decent from a first gear roll and doesn't get too crazy on the 1-2 shift. My H/C 4th gen with similar power levels was absolutely uncontrollable on the street. I had it go sideways on me before hitting 3rd gear lol

Yep, if ya know what your doing, this car will go 12's right off the showroom floor. It really does amaze me how many say it's the cars fault and never consider driver error. The fact is, the car is a 12 sec. car and if someone can't get it there, don't blame the car.

Ah ok, I'm just not as familiar with GM crate engines than I am with Mopar crates.

Thanks for the compliment! Milan is a good strip from what I've heard. I've occasionally through about taking the Challenger on a long trip and doing some drags in different locations, Milan being one of them. The only downside is the fact that my ex-girlfriend is frequently there

Best of luck!

Engine dyno's are always very happy. They did a bunch of engine dyno's on an 03 Cobra motor on MM&FF and the numbers they produced were crazy. Either way, it doesn't matter what an engine dyno says, all that matters is what it makes at the wheels.

the 495 was after modding it. so headers = 70hp? sensationalism. i watched it too.
