Yes, but I'd say it would have more to do with the fact that the early years were the best years for the 2nd gen. The cars at the end of the run were ... less than spectacular.

I think A Z/28 may come near the end of this generation, possibly 2014 or 2015 as the ZL1 should have its run. If they do a Z/28 I doubt it will have an LS7 as the cost of the engine is double that of the LS3. That being said, without a suitable engine, unless they beef up a NA LS3 I would assume that there is a possibility that we may not see the Z28 until 2016. Therefore gen 5 may not get a z28 and everyone holding out may miss the boat. I personally love the gen 5 so I bought it. If a Z28 comes out I'll consider trading it in, I may or may not be interested in a Gen 6 Camaro regardless of the Z28 option if it does not look as good as this generation. Just my two cents.

How many other muscle/pony car models had great performance numbers or styling enhancements from 74 to the 80's? This is when the smog pumps, catalytic converters, bigger bumpers for safety....came into play. It was very disappointing to come out of college in 1976 and have nothing much new to buy. Nothing rock the muscle world again on till a Buick (GN) of all things appeared. And guess what it was V6 turbo !!!!!!

I eventually bought a '80 Z/28 new that was fun for the time. I'm really enjoying this resurgence with the Gen5 and glad to see that GM is already planning the Gen6.

The only car that had any power at the end of the 70's was the 400/403 Trans Am. And it really only had torque (320 ft lbs)as the HP was only 220. It did however have the WS6 handling package that included 4 wheel disc brakes. Even the Vette was not close to this car (for that time).

Actually the smog pumps started appearing earlier than that, I think '67&'68 the Z/28s in California were mandated to have them, in '69 GM went with the smog pump on all Z/28s. That was the first thing I took off of mine when I took delivery in '69, goodbye smog pump and put threaded plugs into the exhaust headers where the pump lines went to. And you are correct, it was all downhill from the early '70s on as more and more emissions and saftey features were added while horsepower disappeared.

Smog pumps, really? A quick look back shows this....and my memory is old and foggy I admit to fully remember otherwise without researching, and I suspect it's even further back...but look at the pic and you tell us...how much this predates your statement.

Sorry I had a 396 big block Camaro and a 396 big block Chevelle that did not have smog pumps. So the big blocks did not have smog pumps till the 70s.

Which versions of the 396 (i.e. HP) did you have? I'm just wondering if some versions did and some didn't.
