racing help... paddles / sports mode ????
Hey peeps!
need some advice, i have a 2010 ss, i love my car but seems like im not getting as much out of it when im racing.... i have a cold air intake and a full magnaflow exhaust so it sounds mean but would love to push her a bit more. currently when i race just switch to "sports/m" .... not really used the paddles. Ive heard on different sites different things, including: - switch to competition mode - use paddles so my question for you guys is.... what do you find works best for you? and people who use the shifter, how do u k now when to shift up or down to get the most power? yep... im retarded but would appreciate y'alls help! thanks peeps!

hey bro what's up? you're talking about diffrent things here like if you want more power you can add long tube headers to your magnaflow with a tune and get easy 50 to 60 rwhp more ,as for the nannies it's always better to shut them off when racing cz they will slow you down at launch ,as for shifting yes paddles make it easier to shift but not faster ,if you get a tune it can give you better shift points and time , you can also get a ported throttle body for a better throttle response this way you can race or launch faster IMO.

thanks bro! i appreciate it, cos i've seen camaro with similar spec's tear me up... so was wondering if they had better racing techniques... lol
so do you prefer using the paddles and switching traction off? thanks.

sure the paddles i got are waaaay easier to shift with and turning off the nannies gives you full control over the wheels after that it's all you but be careful how you drive and keep the rear end under control , give it a try in an empty parking lot or something just to get the hang of it.

How are you racing? If you start from a roll, there are certain speeds that are less than optimal. If you start off slow from a stop, the car will shift into 2nd gear very fast. Then if you decide you wanna go balls to the wall and stomp it, the auto tranny might not downshift back to first (depending on speed) so you'll be stuck powering through 2nd. I've found that during "spirited" driving around town and light to light, paddle shifting seems to make the car feel faster. I love running up 1st gear and paddle shifting into 2nd at high-ish RPMs.
Now if you're drag racing at the strip, I think many will agree that putting it in sport mode and letting the computer shift is best. I paddle shifted during one pass and came out a tenth or two slower. Although, I also shifted late once. I had pretty good results by turning TC OFF, leaving stabil ON and putting the car in sport mode (and letting it shift). Oh yeah, and since you have the auto, you will benefit greatly from a tune. They can tune the tranny as well and the car will feel a lot better! It's worth it for that, and you can also turn off AFM. AFM is a real bummer.

wow, thanks for the advice peeps!
also i have another question- how do i "turn TC OFF, leaving stabil ON" ? ive clicked it 3 times and it said competition mode, but the traction of stabil on sounds more safe! do i click it only once for that? thanks

One push is tc off and stabiltrak on. 2 quick pushes is comp mode. It doesnt turn off stabilitrak it loosens it up a bit for racing. Hold button down for 7 seconds and it will shut off tc and stabilitrak. Paddles suck for drag racing. They lag and rarely if ever give clean shifts.
For drag racing. Put it in M with tc & stabiltrak off. Hold brake at line and give it some throttle to get rpms up and load the converter. Let off brake and smoothly roll into throttle for a clean 60ft. Continue rolling into throttle all the way to floor. Best times your going to get on a basically stock auto. |

If your a novice and just learning. Get used to your car in a controlled setting. Start with safety nannies on and progress your way up. The car has plenty of power and really can easily get away from you. Be safe and practice.

The saftey nannies are traction control and stabilitrak. They can really help save your bacon. If you were to say be at a stop and making a turn and decided to get on it. The backend would slide out and may slide out alot and end up losing it. With stabilitrak on it most likely will snap the rear end back in line and recover you from a spin out.

Agree with all advises above but in order to get the most out of the M (Manual Mode) you need to be able to control your shifts, when to up-shift and when to downshift, just like a manual transmission.
The Manual Mode allows you to push the car further and control the car's response depending on the RPM. 2 important things you wanna do to have better control and reduce shift-timing: New Paddle Shifters + Transmission Tune Pierre777 and 100s of other members are using our Paddle Shifter extensions and were very satisfied with the result. They allow you to control your shifts much easier, no need to be looking for those hidden buttons especially when steering! The other important step is to get a TCM (Transmission Control Module) Tune that will reduce the shift time and firmness the way you like it. Have fun ! |
