E-License Plates?

Saw this story about the possibility of getting e-license plates going in SC.. as far as the anti-theft and reducing the visits to dmv sounds like a plus.. but i can only imagine the price for these things.. here's the story..

Clever idea, but cost wise I'm not seeing it. Each tag would need to have access to the cell towers, which would be a monthly fee charged by the cell companies I'm guessing.

Then there's the security of the system, how long before some hacker gets in and starts changing people's plates around?

Sounds like a great idea...I'd sell ad space to Google on mine. Change it everyday or so to recoup the cost of the plate.

I saw them on CNN earlier. They reported that they are expected to go nationwide by 2020.

It's a neat idea but I'm not seeing it actually being feasible. Besides the security aspect, how are they expecting to power them on current vehicles? Batteries? Require the owners to take them in every night and charge them up? I can see them being required on future vehicles that have a wiring harness built in and designed for it, but for older vehicles I don't think so.

It says the cost would be about $100.

I guess you missed this part

The e-plates could remain completely inert for up to 10 years without any charge and would only require energy if they were to change their display, which the plate would draw from the car's kinetic movements or solar power.

What a bunch of crap! More big brother tracking our movements and our habits...I don't like the sound of this one bit...it's a huge infringement on our privacy. Not to mention the next thing you know...where you go will be affecting your insurance rates. Plus according to what it says...if my license was suspended...all six of my cars would be unavailable for my husband (or friends) to drive?

Stupid, all a thief would have to do is take the plate off, and leave it on the ground.
Put the car in someone else's name?

Does this mean no more front plates? Having a front and rear plate will double the price.

Yeah I'd hope so... Seems like the price for one plate alone would be ridiculous.. Let alone adding an unwanted front plate to the price..
