How Many Will Be Disappointed On Monday?
I believe that there are currently just under 3,100 Chevrolet dealers in the U.S.
I think that an annual production of 5,000 - 7,000 units, or about 6 to 9 percent of total Camaro production, is probably what will be typical for the ZL1. So, for a half year ZL1 production run, as for the 2012 model year, I'm guessing that there will be about 3,000 ZL1s produced, or not quite 1 ZL1 per Chevrolet dealership on average. Therefore, if my 2012 ZL1 production estimates are reasonably accurate, for each 2012 ZL1 allocation above 1 that the larger volume dealerships receive, since it's a zero sum game, a corresponding number of smaller volume dealerships will receive an allocation number of 0 ZL1s for 2012. For example, if a large volume dealership were to receive an allocation of 5 2012 ZL1s, that would mean that 4 smaller dealerships would receive a 2012 ZL1 allocation of 0. If 3,000 2012 ZL1s are produced, and If all dealerships were limited to a maximum of 1 2012 ZL1, then less than 100 dealerships would receive a 2012 ZL1 allocation of 0. Given the above numbers, when the ZL1 allocations are announced on Monday, there may be a scramble to try to find dealerships that have 2012 ZL1 allocations that aren't already dedicated to customers that will be available at MSRP. There may be a number of disappointed individuals based on Monday's allocations.

Translation: There will be more demand than supply for the ZL1.

i don't think so. Not unless the ZL1 comes in at 50-52k, which we already understand ain't gonna happen.
If out of all the members on this site only 54 are comitted to buy, overall that tells me that the demand for the car may come from dealers themselves wanting one to park in the showroom rather than unfulfilled customer orders. Out of 3000 dealers probably 2000 want one to display. That is where the sadness will come in, because they won't all be getting one to display due to allocation and sold customer orders. My dealer has also mentioned there are ways around allocation for those dealers who get a zero, so I think sold orders take a priority over unsold orders somehow..just a guess. |

I'm surprised in this economy people still have money to drop down ~55k on a car....well then I guess there is a reason why we aren't in those "Occupy" rallys. LOL

Bear, I think your analysis is probably spot on. Depending on if GM wants to react quickly to demand and alter initial production plans. It would be nice to see some resiliency in manufacturing to meet the needs of the consumer.
This isn't a Model T and it isn't 1908. So, lets see what happens! Good luck to all who want this as much as I do! May we all have the opportunity to participate! |

If, of the three dealers I’m working with, I can’t get one I’ll just sit back and relax for 2013. I’ve done what I can and I don’t think I’m going to go crazy searching the country for a dealer with an unused allocation.
In reality I want a 2012 only because it will be more of a rarity (don’t read I think it will be rare) than the other model years. The only reason I’d be kicking myself is if they drop IOM and don’t replace it with another orange next year. Otherwise I look forward to what improvements might be made in the years to come. |

Catch me if you can

I have been talking with 3 dealerships. 1 is local, and 2 are an hour away. Now the 2 that are an hour away are trying to tell me that they will for sure receive at least 3 or more ZL-1s due to the fact that they are high volume dealerships. And they are trying to tell me that my local will not receive anything. My local dealership does pretty well since it's parked about 1 mile from the main gate of the Military post here. So they may not be super high volume sellers, but they do meet the quota for most limited sale vehicles. The only vehicle they can't bring in due to sales is the ZR-1. And those are very limited to dealerships that sell a super high volume.
If anything I think mine will receive 1 or 2 cars to start off with, then it will be a vehicle that gets brought in on special requests.

Fingers are crossed, I'm hoping one of the two dealers I'm working with gets at least one! Guess I'll know Monday...

While I agree dealers will want one for display, dealers are in business to make money. If they can sell, IMO they will. Except for maybe a small fraction. Everything I said is just my opinion and I am sure there will be dealers who won't sell. |

It will be interesting to see who marks them up to stratospheric levels and who is dumb enough to let them get away with it.

So which would be more desireable...a rare 2012 or a newer 2013...?

Either way, I'm shooting for a 2012. The only things that'll make me wait for a 2013 are issues with availability and my dealer going back on his MSRP sale price word.
