safety tests

are there any safety tests done yet?

I'm in the market now for a 2 door coupe in the 30-40k range

cars on my short list are the 135i, g37s, and the camaro

safety > performance > looks, the 135i comes out on top right now, until I see some camaro safety figures/tests

I've owned mustangs and bmw's 3 series/m3's most of my life, with a couple trucks in there, gm & ford

I'm very fond of the bmw controls, but 0-60 is lacking, except on these new turbo 135's

currently in a mini cooper S aka gocart but I need something a little bigger and faster, my mini had an altercation with a truck, so I want something a little bit bigger, once you have a good look at a truck grill going 65 sideways down the interstate you think about the size of your car, even though mini's are probably the funnest car I've ever driven

I know GM was shooting for a 5 star safety rating and safety equipment is a big reason why the weight is a bit higher than what we wanted. It should do very well in crash tests but I don't think they have been done yet. Probably closer to release. My girlfriend had a mini when I met her and that car is tiny, made me a little concerned when on the highway to say the least.

that is good to know, I guess I need to decide if I want to go with another bmw, or wait on the camaro

I love the camaro except the dash/interior

I love the bmw except that twin turbo scares me, reliability wise

the camaro will probably be more mod friendly, bmw dealers frown on any mods to the engine, and void warranty's for stupid crap

the Camaro weighs as much as it does for a reason. Safety tests haven't been done but they should happen in the fall shortly after the first cars roll off the assembly line.

I'm pretty sure the Camaro has side impact bags and the standard bags in the dash, but I also remember reading about knee bags. You can see the "Airbag" tags stitched into the seats. But, have the knee bags been confirmed, or did I just read that from another post here? Regardless, I am pretty sure the Camaro would be significantly safer than a Mini. You're so close to the door in a Mini and they are quite thin, there's not much of a crumple zone.

Looking at the picture you posted, I don't even see a deployed side air bag/curtain. Do the Mini's have them? Also, what was the speed of impact to your car? There doesn't look to be much damage, all things considered. I'd think a 20-ton semi hitting a Mini at anything above 20mph would completely destroy it.

the impact speed was just enough to crush the door but did not trigger the side airbag, and the interior trim was not touched, even the mounting tabs were still fine

we were going sideways at 60mph and the truck was probably going 65mph when he hit us

I'm interested to know the safety/crash results as well. All in due time, I guess. Coming out of full size truck, I'm hoping for 5-star ratings all around since I won't have the height of my truck to save my a$$ when some idiot hits it. At least most cars go under the truck instead of into it like they will with the Camaro.

As for the Camaro, it's got 6 airbags standard:

Six standard airbags: Dual-stage frontal air bags, Head-curtain side-impact air bags, Front-seat-mounted, side-impact thorax air bags for driver and front passenger.

i'm surprised a hit that hard didn't do more damage or even set off the airbag

i've always known german cars to be fairly safe (especially volvos, bricks on wheels lol)

i'd trust the camaro as well - its just those japanese imports that scare me - nothing but plastic, hell if a deer rushed one @ a stand still, the driver might die

here is a pic of a BMW from my other forum - this guy walked away

The Camaro is very safe. Expect a 5-star rating.

This will make insurance customers pretty happy.
