Car Law- i.e. tire size, exhaust noise
First off, I know this varies from state to state.
But, does anyone (cops on the site)(Tag) know about specific laws regarding things like exhaust noise, exhaust exit placement, tire size, truck lifts, ect. I know Texas has some pretty big trucks, Michigan State Troopers love to mess with 4x4s, But I seen a monster of an F-350 in South Padre, we're talking huge think they were bigger than 44 inch tires. (I actually have a pic, will post below) But my exact question is -how loud can a car be, in decibals I assume, before you can be ticketed. My truck is around 104 db and have been warned for loud exhaust, even though I have two mufflers and full exhaust. -AND do the exhaust tips have to exit the vehicle behind the rear axel. I am sure that is a Michigan law. I love the nascar exhaust on the chop pic this SS Camaro, but is it legal Thanks |

We have trucks just about twice the size as that one! The main law that people have to abide it the height of the headlights. I think it is around no taller than 52 inches and no lower than something like 20... So, as far as I know and was taught, you could lift a truck just about as high as you wanted, but you just had to pay attn to the headlights.
Exhaust is pretty much standard. You must have it in legal emissions standars. In other words, you have to have cats and mufflers. That's a ticket there. Then, if the sound is loud enough (can't remember the db levels) that can mean a citation as well. Shake my car and that's good enough for me. |

Hmm, well it might take an exhaust pro to fit cats and mufflers under there and still bring it out behind the front tire. But i am sure it could be done, something i think i will look into for sure. Thanks

Yeah...there's tons of types of cats/mufflers. I've seen some really short cats and mufflers before. I'd talk to my local inspection station and find out from their manager the specifics regarding exhaust emissions. The problem is that law states one thing and usually inspection stations are more strict. For example, law would state you need to have cats mufflers whereas inspection would say you can't drill holes in your exhaust pipes. Talk to them and find out. That's your best bet.

the cops here also have those laws, i think there is a db rate. but its all up the the officer giving out the ticket and how he perceives the noise. cops dont carry around db meters. so if you think your exhaust isnt that loud u can probably fight the ticket

In CA, the law is 94 or 97 decibels if I remember correctly. My friend with an accord kept getting pulled over even though the exhaust she had was 50 state legal. It was right around that borderline. 104 I think might be a bit loud.

I think all states are different, and the police make their own opinions. Here in Virginia, an associate of mine got a ticket for loud exhaust on a brand new Dodge SSRT 8.

To be honest, I don't know. The best way to do it is look under the car. If it's missing its cats or mufflers, you can write the person a citation for "not in inspected condition." Then, you don't have to worry about the db level and someone fighting the ticket. The officer plainly states...."there were no catalytic converters in the exhaust system for the Def's car." That'll fly everytime. Going by db level, I could see a potential problem. However, there are more than a few officers who actually carry the db meter reader.
