First oil change test results puzzle…
I hit 500 miles on my baby so time to change the fluids; oil, rear diff, and transmission. I sent an oil sample off to Blackstone for testing and got the results back Monday. At first I was concerned where they mention fuel dilution present and viscosity thin for 0W/40. I scanned the results then compared to others on here who use 0W/40 oil. The break in looks similar to those, but the oil is different (additive package and viscosity). I called Blackstone and actually got to speak to the analyst who tested my oil. She said I listed the sample as 0W/40 but her viscosity test showed it to be 5W/30.
She said she used 0W/40 as the base line for her testing. My fuel dilution was within range but on the high side when calculated using 0W/40, but would drop considerably if 5W/30 was used as the base line. I checked Mobil1 and their full synthetic 5W/30 is very similar in viscosity. I tried checking AC Delco 5W/30 but couldn’t find it, and it looks like it’s made by Phillip66 who has several 5W/30. I contacted my salesman who said they don’t change the oil on factory new cars, just check that it’s full. And the recommended factory fill I should list for my test is 0W/40. So, the puzzle is how does it appear my 2024 1SS/1LE M6 produced (3800) 10/26/2023 was delivered to me with 5W/30 oil in it??? |

5w-30 is a recommended oil in the LT1 and I would imagine that there was a shortage of 0-40 that day, assuming it was indeed 5W30 that blackstone suggests.

I know 5w30 was initially the recommended oil fill but then they switched to 0w40. Was just surprised to see it come from Lansing with 5w30. That’s if Blackstone tested it correctly and the dealership didn’t change it. |

regardless of the viscosity, the numbers look good/expected for current mileage. And from now on you have control of the oil to set a baseline.

The viscosity is similar to the factory fill (I assume) on my 23. Looking at the oldest sample.

Your flashpoint is low, and blackstone infers that to be there is fuel. They don't do scientific test for fuel.
Normally I'd say it might be a 5w30, but with only 500 miles its gotta be fuel diluting the viscosity as well. Do you drive short trips alot in winter? The first oil change doesn't reall give a good baseline anyway due to break in, I'd just continue to monitor.

You are correct I control what oil she gets now.
I picked her up on December 8th, so all the trips have been during winter, but I don’t drive her much. A good combination of 50 mile trips and 10 mile trips, but always long enough to warm up good and enjoy as much as I could below 4 grand. Either way, I’m not concerned until I get some more miles and tests. I was more intrigued by the possibility she came with 5w30. |

This was my first experience with testing oil, and I realize 1 test with low miles does little more than starting a baseline for later testing and comparison. The main purpose was to change the oil.
For future testing, is Blackstone the go to or is there another oil tester that’s preferred? |

Everything needs to seat, so you’re gonna get the drunken sailor with no teeth effect on the first. After that you should see a downhill spiral with numbers.

Nothing alarming for a new car driven in the winter on mixed trips and what I assume is very limited spirited driving, if any, to get the oil up past 200F.
