I remember listening to the video you posted and the noise sounds like lifter(s) to me, not piston slap. I had an LS motor with piston slap, and I don't remember it sounding like this. Unfortunately for me, the piston slap in my engine never completely subsided when warm.

True that. The 02 does demonstrate some piston slap, and this is DEFINITELY not it. I think the tech's dodging the job.

Dropped my car off yesterday to have the lifters replaced. They said it should be ready by Wednesday, but it scares the crap out of me they are basically taking this apart down to a short block.

The new lifters are starting to tap more often. Not as loud as before but it's there. Maybe 4 times in the last 2 weeks. Still haven't solved the hot coolant smell. It's not overheating, the fluid level is not going down, and the oil looks good. The smell is strongest around the upper radiator return hose. There's UV dye in the system but I haven't found a leak of any kind. The dealer gets their turn Friday.

The "coolant smell" might be similar to one I've had with my Chevy SSRs. With my 06 Chevy SSR, I would smell the sweet smell of coolant but could find no leak. The upper radiator hose would be where I would smell it the most. I decided to purchase new radiator hoses and have a cooling system flush and pressure test. The pressure test was fine before and after the hoses were replaced. The "smell" went away after the hoses were replaced, but only for about 3 to 4 weeks and it was back.

The DexCool used by GM seems to some component in it that seeps through the radiator hoses and produces the sweet smell. My current 04 SSR has the "same coolant smell" coming from the top radiator hose. It's not leaking nor is the cooling system losing any fluid, so I've just come to accept it as "GM normal". Weird, I agree!

I am about to have my L99 converted to LS3 with different lifters. I have the lifter tap at cold start but not as noticable after warming. I do here it at times in manual mode if I down shift and the rpms are real high. I will see if the LS3 conversion corrects this and post up.

The dealer claims to have found a crack in the coolant recovery tank. New one on order. I checked it out when I got home but couldn't find the crack. Weird too the smell is gone. Hey jsharp, Thunder Racing makes the conversion kits your looking for.

My car is going to a performance shop next week to be worked on. I've had some pretty significant tapping the last few days. I've had the tapping for a long time, but just recently (last few days) its gotten louder. Then last night it got really bad (very noticeably tapping while I'm driving -especially around 2k rpms) and started making a screaching sound at times when I let off the gas.

My car has 12K miles (pre-order car from Spring 09) and it has always had a slight tap.

I'm now thinking of getting a cam installed while its being worked on. I was thinking that I should take advantage of the heads being pulled off.

This is the kind of scenario that worries me. :(

i just posted about this a few days back. I really don't want them digging into my engine, but I don't want to let it slide and then have my warranty expire.:( The noise doesn't happen all the time though...

Most dealerships aren't that way. I can't imagine a dealer turning away real warranty work. Just my .02 cents worth

WOW... I have the dam clicking too, only at cold startup though... Guess I have to take her in to be stripped and fixed. Maybe they can fix her oil leaks and strut noises during this trip...

My issue ended up being a bad header gasket. It sounded just like a bad lifter tap.

I know that was a relief, an easy fix for once.
