MY PASSION STARTED EARLY

My passion for GM started for me at the young age of 6. I new my mother was in search of a car of her own, for my Grandfathers 1977 Pontiac Catalina, which she drove daily since my grandfathers stroke 2 days after he purchased it new off the show room floor, left her stranded for work. Missing a day from work was a big deal to her. It was a cold 1984 December morning, I new something was up, mom always left for work around 6AM, yet this morning she was still home when I woke for school. She said no school for you today, I have a surprise. I thought its not my Birthday and Christmas is far away.... a few minutes later my uncle Charlie showed up, he never came inside he just honked his horn and my mom got in the car with him and left... I was very upset, I told my grandma, hey uncle Charlie didn't even let me see his car, everyone new i was a car fanatic. Uncle charlie had a Buick Skyhawk, purchased about a month earlier, it wasn't a big deal he had taken me for like 50 rides already...my grandma said its ok eat your breakfast. I wasn't hungry, so I played with my hot wheels, about an hour later, my mom came home, and said surprise I looked at my grandmother and said whats the surprise???.... my mom pointed out the window and there it was a BRAND NEW 1984 BUICK REGAL GRAND NATIONAL!!! my grandmother was quite surprised also she said "I thought you were going to get the deep burgundy, thats not the car we looked at, that car is black I would never get a black car" I was confused you mean to tell me you guys had went to the dealership, and didn't take me....I didn't care I grabbed my jacket and ran like the wind, my uncle Charlie was already outside reading the owners manual....the smell of that car I will never forget. my mom came outside behind me, with the biggest smile, I was so excited, you would have thought the car was mine, I walked around it taking in every detail, she took me an uncle Charlie for a ride ill never forget, everyone in town looked and pointed. Every time we had to fill up some man was giving her "ME" compliments on the car.....it was common for us to take trips to Baltimore to visit my older sister in College, (who be graduating this spring with her Doctrine "CONGRATS") during those trips I was that kid looking for races, begging for Mom to "BURY THE NEEDLE, which she did FREQUENTLY...back then the dash only went up to 85, so at about 90 the needle would disappear........I never again felt that feeling again until my 2013 Camaro. The way people look, point, give you compliments it a feeling of no other .....Wasnt until today I never thought my mom knew the difference between a Regal and a Grand National, at the time she never made a big deal, my 2 older sisters and my older brother learned how to drive in it, to her it was a car, Tonight we were talking about the new iPhone 5S, she wants to get one....I said u dont need a new iPhone, u dont no the difference from your current iPhone. Moms now 65 and getting up there... I said you didn't even no we had a GN, you thought we had a regular Regal, she said I might not remember all the details like you, but Im the one who paid for it dont let Uncle Charlie fool you... yes he got me a good deal but NOT that damm good..... I paid top dollar for that car, all I could do was laugh who says TOP DOLLAR anymore....

I always likes the Grand Nationals. For me though it was my dad's 1986 Monte Carlo SS. I thought that car was awesome! I really wish he'd never gotten rid of it! Thanks for sharing!

Cool Story. I had to check out your list at the bottom. I used to have a 65 Le Mans that looked just like the one in the photo only not a convertable. I remember when the 80's LeMans came out. Quite the difference.

I thought this was going to be some tender coming of age story that slowly descends into tawdry sexual addiction.

Imagine my surprise and disappointment.

My sister had a 68 GTO with a 4 speed. That car could haul. I seem to recall she paid about $400 for it. It was the 70's and the gas crisis. People were practically giving them away. A friend of hers had a yellow 69 Camaro SS. Loved that car. The body lines. The juxtaposition of sharp lines and curves. Beautiful. I could look at that car for hours.

The closest GM has ever come to that same use of sharp lines and curves is the gen 5. It is why I finally bought my yellow '13 SS. I can't afford to rebuild a 69 with a 396 and with all the modern safety and conveniences. With the new hood on the '14 it spoils the line, IMO. So I made sure I got the '13 and couldn't be happier. And just like that old 69 SS I stared at as a kid back in 74. I can look at my Yellow '13 SS for hours and see the beauty of those lines. A work of art....powerful, rolling sculpture.
