Hendrick Motorsports SS?

A used car dealer right across the street from me has a used 4th gen SS I just saw on the lot last night. He doesn't have it listed on the website yet so I'm not even sure what year it is or anything. Anyway, from driving past I could see it's a pewter SS with T-tops and black racing stripes. The second time I went past I noticed there are badges on the pillars that appear to say "hendrick motorsports". What makes it different from a regular SS? Is there performance modifications? Also, would this be rare? I'm not sure what he's asking for it, but I'm definately interested, probably will call over there on monday. I have bought from him before too.

Did the badge look anything like this?

I'm not real familiar with Hedrick's custom 4th gen, but I have seen this...

Here it is... http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...standard=false

I don't know if it is true, but they are rumored to have produced 61 SS coupes plus 9 SS coupes with LT4 engines.

All (61?) LT1 Hendrick Motorsports 1997 SLP Camaro SS's were Silver with Black Stripes Package.

All (9) LT4 Hendrick Motorsports 1997 SLP Camaro SS's were Hardtop/Manual White with Orange Stripes

This is from my friend Andy who owns 1 of the 9 LT4 Hendrick Motorsports 1997 SLP Camaro SS:

I don't think Hendrick did any performance mods to the cars, it was an appearance package that SLP installed for them.

The LT1 Hendrick MS package included:

Chrome 17" x 9" Firehawk chrome wheels
Heritage Stripes on hood, roof, and deck lid
Hendrick Custom floor mats
Hendrick Dash Plaque
Hendrick Key Fobs
Hendrick Sail Panel Badges
Hendrick Car Cover
Quaker State Lube Package
Dual Dual Performance Exhaust System
BF Goodrich Comp TA Tires

Hope this helps!

I went and looked at it, there's no one there because of Christmas eve and all as expected, but I looked it over. It's actually in pretty good shape. The one taillight has a lot of condensation in it, the driver's seat has a couple cigarette holes, and the center caps on the wheels look like they could stand to be replaced, but overall the car looks good. I noticed the seats had 30th anniversary embroidery, was this normal for all camaros from '97? Or is it a 30th edition also?

Pretty sure that's standard for 97s...

How much real difference is there between the LT1 and the LS1? I found this one, about 100 miles away, but 4 years newer with similar mileage and price.

Both great motors, but the LS1 is not only more rugged, but the aftermarket is much bigger. Plus, it just has more

The LT1 is an aluminum block steel heads engine. LS1 is all aluminum. The LT1 has what they call optispark. It is driven off the camshaft and sits directly under the water pump. The LT1 was used from 93-97. In 98 they started producing the LS1. The LT1 used a different type of water pump due to the optispark. It is a common problem for the water pump to leak prematurely and then it would run on top of the optispark ignition and ruin it. In late 96 and all of 97, GM started venting the optispark so when the water pump let go the water would run out and around the ignition to keep from ruining it. Having steel heads the LT1 is a little more tricky to cool. Between the ignition running off the cam and the steel heads, it is a little tougher to mod. It can be done but I would definately go to someone that is really good with this setup. i.e. Lingenfelter. Any Corvette or Camaro from 93-97 has an LT1. They are good motors. But if I went that route I would definately go with a 97. I know a bunch of them out there with 150,000 miles plus and still running strong. Oh, by the way, all 97 Camaro's had 30th stitched in the seats.
