So, heres whats up my soon to be Houstonians. I am moving down there for work, from missouri. I dont have the funds to make a trip down there just to locate an apartment.

I secured an apartment, got it all set up, utilities and everything. Well online searches lead me no where, so i just called the local police department to check on the crime rate (vehicle theft and vandalism) Simply put by the officer "that car wont last a week down there" and "this is no place for a young kid from out of town to be staying"

Needless to say, Im on the hunt for another apartment.

Any tips on how an out of towner can find safe and unsafe neighborhoods? Im told Houston is a great place to live, but there is always a nasty neighborhood around the corner.

$500-$700 with much favor to the lower end of that. Obviously a gated community is highly attractive. 10-15 minutes from work would be awesome.

I just have no idea of the area.

That's a great area... lots of places around the Willowbrook mall area. My son lives in an Apt just West of your work at 290 and Beltway 8. I think his rent may be a tad higher than $700 but it is gated and has an enclosed 1 car garage.

The Willowbrook area has a lot to offer in the upper end of your price range. The Lighthouse at Willowbrook is gated and looks nice from the outside. And it's very close to your office. If you look east of Hwy249 the area is a little nicer but probably a little more expensive. There is a nice complex on FM1960 around the 6000th block. Also a nice complex next to my neighborhood on Cutten Rd called Carrington at Champions Forest. Apts are everywhere but to be honest, you may need to spend a little over $700 to get a garage, etc.

PS The Willowbrook area has a lot of restaurants/bars for single guys not wanting to cook.

We set an open date for our CrossFit on June 9 from 8 - 12. We are planning on having a DJ and food. There is also a bike shop and car restoration place in the same set of buildings who are going to participate. I am at work now, but will post up a flyer when I get home. There is a pretty large empty lot on the property that is perfect for a meet. PM me if you are interested in coming out.

You can also check out our website now at www.CrossFitMagnolia.com. It's got details on our location and some links to info about CrossFit.

you'll be working right down the road from my current job and also from my old location. The area around there can be tricky. One block can be nice and the next can be on the verge of getting your tires stolen at a stop light. I would probly suggest coming down and getting a feel where you are/want to be by staying in a hotel for a few days. A $700 top end budget might be tricky to find some where that you feel comfortable with your car. I paid $1100 a month for a gated community before we bought our house.

Thank you everyone. I ended up moving a bit further away from work, about 20 minutes. Found a nice place around 1960 and 45. Anyone close?

Yes, it's for the tollway. You'll head south on I45, then go west on the Beltway till you get to your exit. Not a bad drive at all. $1.50 each way thru the toll gate plus whatever your tollway exit charges. Probably figure $5 per day. The tolltag sends you a monthly bill.

Otherwise, shoot across FM1960 to your office. But a lot of lights that way. No tolls.

I'm at 1960 and Hwy 249 more or less.
