Time to melt some cats.

Put the Kook's HFC's on today in prep for the bi-annual emission test. Never got a reply if anyone melted a set of Kook's non green cats boosted so we'll see if the corn will pop 'em at 10 psi. I know many other cats have been kooked. Pun intended.

Welded another bung in front of the substrate to monitor temps pre-cat to compare what I had catless. Maxed out at 1350*f after a 3-4 speed run to 150 (on closed roads of course) when catless. Hoping for good weather and time off over the weekend.

At idle catless I had 200*f and catted I see 400*f radiating back inside them. Probe tip is ~3/8 inch in front of the substrate.

I wonder what temp will melt the substrate on these.

When they pop I'll gut them. I have a small usb camera on a wand so I can pull the temp sensor and take a peek inside as well. It takes less than an hour to do the swap so it's not a big deal.

It doesn't stink bad catless on E85 but I have to pass a visual & OBDII every two years.

Got a question for you on the whole OBDII thing.
What exactly are they looking for? If the codes for the rear O2 sensors are turned off in the ECM, will that fail the OBDII check?

Got to wind out 3rd today and compare it to a catless log. No change in boost or MAF freq max, 60-100mph times the same so no performance loss to speak of. 80* ambient 70% humidity and had a 3.9 sec 60-100 on the same level ground logged in HPTuners from a 50 roll in third.

Max EGT catless was 1200 at the top of third, today I saw 1360*f pre cat.

Time will tell.

I read on here (so I know it's true) that melted cats are caused by a tune that is too rich. ??

Doubtful since cat overtemp protection in a tune richens it up.

I would think too lean and too high EGT's would melt them. Most I've seen cooked were melted over on the inlet side.

Too rich can melt them in a hurry. They're made to burn up the left over fuels and convert them.

I had a old '83 GMC once with longtubes and some generic universal cats and the floats on the carb got stuck once so bad it was blowing black smoke out of the pipes at idle. It never really ran real well after that and turned out the cat was nice and melty.

I suppose the opposite extreme is possible too though.
