2015 ZL1 Drag Edition

Now that I have your attention.

Ok, we have had the supercar debate and the Z/28 vs. ZL1 debate, now it is time to get back to business! Looking at the above picture it makes me think that maybe it is time for another class. We have pony cars, muscle cars, sports cars, supercars and now MEGATRON cars. Obviously Camaro has the market cornered on transformation. We have seen how the Camaro has obliterated the competition on a road course. The 1LE, ZL1 and Z/28 are kings of the road course. Ford tried but failed and the other company (Buhler, Buhler, Buhler) hasn’t even shown up, but that is about to change. The “Hellcat” appears to be attempting to enter the fray. The ZL1 was first and appears it will remain the best all-around transformer. The “Hellcat” appears to be suffering from the same problem as the GT500, overpowering to make up for a lack of a good suspension, rear end, too much weight and like the GT500 maybe brakes. Unless Ford and Mopar address the suspension, brakes and rear end issues they will never compete with Camaros on the track. The Z/28 has set the bar on the track, isn’t it time that the Camaro sets the standard at the drag strip.
I think it is time we take the title for “King of Road” to include the drag strip. I think GM should put out a ZL1 (drag strip option) either the last year of the Gen5 or first year of Gen6. Using the ZL1 as a base platform would also be true to the heritage of the ZL1 as a drag car. The ZL1 has proven it is the perfect platform for increased power as substantiated by many ZL1 owners here. It is about time they produce a drag version that will take it to the GT500 and the “HellCat”. For all intensive purposes they made a strictly track car (Z/28) so why not a strip dedicated version (I know we have the COPO but it is not street legal). I think by taking over the drag strip the Camaro has the potential to be the true “King of the Road”

Update: I guess this would now be the 2017, 18? Edition.

I would love for GM to just give us factory stage kits like they did with the Cobalt SS to address the HP deficit as a start.

Man...That would be sweet! I don't know why that wasn't priority number 1. But Great! Now we have a snake and a cat to deal with!

That's a big assumption for a car that's not out on the street yet. The fact is; if the Hellcat beats the ZL1 soundly in straight line performance the majority of enthusiasts (not mag writers) will declare it faster regardless of any track lap times from tracks none of them will ever visit.

For the record; the new GT500 is not a clod. They're bad to bone. My friend has a heavily modded '12 and you would be surprised how well Ford has done with the live axle setup. Not as good as the ZL1 but pretty darn good. It's the clutch and shifter that make a bigger difference between the two imo.

I agree and been stating this for a while now; but it seems GM is going away from straight line performance to focus on handling in pursuit to become more of a globally accepted brand when it comes to performance numbers. Which is fine; but then you become a jack of all trades but master of none.

Back to the point. I doubt GM will offer a drag pack for the 5th Gen ZL1; but let's dream anyway. Drop in the LS9 (with a CAI, but don't rate the hp to contribute to the aura), offer only the 6L90E (loosen the stall by 200-300 rpms) with the 3.90 rears from the 1LE, Z228 exhaust and wheels (but please, no crappy GY tires) and throw in some weight reduction and maybe even change the hood (gasp) to a super lightweight cowl induction for one last stab at nostalgia. I wouldn't be surprised if don't already have something similar tooling around at their skunkworks.

Flame suit on

In the same way the zl1 ran a faster track time in roughly half the tests against the GT500, and was more predictable and easier to drive doing so,

You might as well go ahead and call the zl1 the king of the street and drag strip too...its an auto so surely its more predictable and easy to pilot down the strip.

Ford tried and failed at everything against the super car camaro lineup.

I tend to look at this differently than most on this board. I think it's awesome that no matter which brand you prefer, you can go get an amazing muscle car (all equipped with their own strengths and weaknesses).

Because it drives manufacturer improvements.

Maybe not, but maybe they will hydrogen powered and even faster. Competition is good, it drive technological improvements. Wouldn't it be cool to own the last gas powered, fastest stock, street legal 1/4 mile car in history?
