And I can see where I would want to ask someone about taking the picture of my vin#, but people are insanely paranoid.

Thanks for sharing and I think you acted very respectfully, IMHO...

As far as the VIN, 'to each his/her own'...just respect other's opinions about stuff, even if you don't always agree...you acted appropriately when confronted...

The only beef is you on her property....aside from that, cinderblock to the face for her freaking out about a damn VIN.

Dealerships, Walmart, junkyards, etc....VINs are amoung us.

Clownshoes....and I voted accordingly

I'm more on her side. If I came out and saw somebody taking pics of my license plate, and vin number I would immediately be suspicious. I would wonder are you an investigator, or police officer, was my car involved in some kind of crime, are you going to sue me for something, are you some kind of freak or stalker, etc.

So yes anybody can look at a license plate/VIN in a parking lot but do they ? No. What if you walked out and saw somebody not with a camera but with a pencil/paper and they were writing down your license and VIN number on a paper. Would you be suspicious ?

WTF? Is that the Indy cosmetic edition? Stock suspension and no performance mods?

No wonder she didn't want you taking a pic of the vin.

I was taking pixs of the car then her husband came out and we talked a little and i even took pix of the back of her car just after he went inside, exhaust tips were huge. The only suspicious part was when i came back and took one of the vin, then another one of the fender

I think it was fine just because of how it ended. If the ending was different, like if she got mad then I think it would be messed up in a way.

yep, that would definitely make me suspicious. Taking pictures wouldn't cause me much concern but then if you leave and then come back and this time are concentrating on VIN/license plate, yep I am definitely going to start asking questions. And I can't imagine that most people wouldn't be at least a bit suspicious of that, it's no different than somebody writing your license plate and VIN on a piece of paper and it would get me thinking about what you are doing.

Your explanation is innocent enough, but still just seems a bit strange. I am 42 years old and not once has anybody ever written down my VIN or took a picture of it unless it was because I was just involved in an accident. I would say that is unusual activity. Does anybody else on this forum regularly take pictures or write down peoples VIN's ? Sounds like you both handled the situation fine. But if I were you I wouldn't suggest you write too many peoples VIN's down you have no idea who you may run into, in LA I would say that is a very bad idea to do in a parking lot.

Just an FYI for everyone. Everything associated with your license plate (VIN, address, name etc) is a matter of PUBLIC record. Anyone can get it by requesting it. Remember, your license plate is not actually yours, it's the property of the state who issued it.

Would I take a picture of a VIN? No...I even blur out plates of another car if it's in a pic of mine...but that's just me being respectful. VIN numbers aren't some super secret thing.

I took the one of the rear of the car far away not right up on the plate, after i talked to the husband. then i came back, got vin, then got pix of the quarter flare options it had and it did have the GM emblems, hence the reason i was looking at the vin. i get it, i get it. No more vins
