Sending payment as a gift with PayPal?
Ive been on many forums with quite a bit higher post count then here...
Question is, do you ever feel comfortable sending payment as a gift through PayPal? Say, someone with a couple thousand posts here, you never met? Would you send payment? Would you be comfortable?

I always hesitate to do that. You have no recourse if they fail to come through.
Consider factors like how much can you afford to lose, and what they post about. If you're not sure then you probably shouldn't do it. How much money are we talking? |

<$300
Not as much about the money, more about the question posed Would you send any payment as a gift?

But with some assurances like the seller has been around awhile and demonstrates rational thought in their posts. I do a little background work first. If they insist on PP gift only, then I would be suspicious. Personally, when I sell anything I offer a "no fee" price. That usually ends up being a money order or PP gift. Some people are all about the price... |

It depends on the seller. If they have a good reputation on the site you are doing business then I would have no problem doing it. I am a member of a prop builders club and have bought thousands of dollars worth of parts over the past few years, many of which were gift payments through PayPal. I havent been burned on any of them.

yeah, I would have to do some investigating first. see if they are active in their Camaro community/regional section. or if they only post in the for sale section. stuff like that. or i'll just pay the extra fee to send not as a gift, if I feel they are being shady, but still a good price for whatever it is I want.

Actually you have the same recourse. Look here (You can read the whole thread but start at post 73): http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=348295 Buyer sent a gift payment and PayPal had no issues honoring his dispute. Sent from my 2SS/RS |

No, I wouldn't and have never asked anyone to do it and won't for anyone else either.

If a person is selling something and you reply to his/her ad asking if they take Paypal...then he insists payment as a gift to avoid the fees..then do one of 2 things. Add the 3% yourself to avoid any issue or send as a "gift" avoiding fees.

Just depends on the situation. I've done it more than a few times and will again. And I've never asked someone to send their payment to me as a gift either but they always have anyway.

You think sending a gift payment is risky. Last year I was selling a complete set of Brembos and the member did not have PayPal. Instead he sent me a 1K money order (in advance of shipping). I honestly did not think he'd send it but he actually did, I was shocked. I have to say at 1st I was nervous to deposit it thinking it might be fraud but it was ok.
Needless to say he got his Brembos 3 days later. |

However, PP's current T&Cs 13.3 clearly state Personal Payments are ineligible for Purchase Protection. I assume the Gift payment falls in that category. They go on to state this at the end of that section... Even if your payment is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection, you can file a Dispute and try to resolve the issue directly with the Seller; however, PayPal will generally not find in your favor if you escalate a Dispute to a Claim for an item which is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection. I still say "Gift" at your own risk... |
