Change in horsepower for 2013

How many of you (like me) have ordered a 2012 ZL1 and wonder if GM will up the horsepower for 2013 in order to best the GT500? I'm going to be one unhappy dude if that happens and I'm sitting with a 2012 with less hp than a 2013. I hope they leave well enough alone. I'm satisfied with 580hp.

if you're satisfied with the hp that comes with the 2012, why would you be upset if they up the hp for 2013?

In the automotive industry things change rapidly ..... If you keep waiting for the next best thing you are never going to get a car!

I'd be suprised if they up the HP for 2013. The 2012 is only being released a few months before the 2013 model comes out.

If that's your worry, then why not just hold off on buying until the 2013's are available? Rarely does the subsequent model of a new car not get upgrades in its sophomore year. Whether or not one of those upgrades is more power remains to be seen.

It's my opinion that GM is unlikely to give the ZL1 more power from the factory but have made that car such that there is plenty of room for improvement in power output for individuals who want more power.

You're both right. I just would really like the 2013 to stay pretty much the same as the 2012.

I really doubt ZL1 is going to match the GT500's power; ZR1 doesn't even do that. T could see a bump, probably not in '13, to 600-620, but I really can't see matching that power. It would probably need a 2300, forged pistons, new fuel system, and Lord knows what else to support that power. We don't even know the price point the GT' is going to be at (and I kinda' doubt it's going to be less than $60K, given all the upgrades). LSA is stout - and we know all the hours on the dyno' and at the track it's been at, but I think it's a lot to ask GM to add that to LSA as we know it without a huge increase in price.

I hope I'm wrong, though...

I have wondered the same question as well. However, I am tired of waiting and will enjoy my 2012 ZL1 when it is delivered. It will be interesting to see if they make a HP change in 6 months. I am sure that there will some options available on the 2013 that are not available on the 2012 model, like the ZL1 Carbon Edition. If they do bump up the HP, I would be surprised if it went more than 20-30HP. I do not think that we will see the 100 HP difference that the GT500 got between 2012 and 2013. It could be worse, you could be taking delivery of a 2012 GT500 and knowing that if you had waited a few more months, you could have had a 100 HP more.

I kind of wish GM at least boosted it to 600hp. It's only another 20hp but it's a psychological thing with most people.

ZL1 V, Optional Performance Package, Track Pack, GMPP, warranty, 600+ ???

I'll hope to see these types of things.

I'm sure I'll think about them while I'm out passing Rustangs in my first year ZL1.

If this is the way you feel I would wait. If I was not chomping it to bit to get a different car I would wait.

there is alot of hype in the air right now. If the GT500 comes in cheap enough and performes up to the hype it should steal some thunder and make the new model more affordable at least in 2013. If it is still over powered and not balanced well then people won't have buyer's remorse about not waiting for the ford. these are questions that can't be answered right now.

I have a feeling the first buyers (me included) could have some remorse if the GT500 is truely awesome, the 2013 is 5k cheaper beacuse the hype wears off, or gets a power upgrade that does not retrofit to the 2012 with waranty intact.

In my opinion you will see a similar change as we've seen for the v6 Camaros that went from 304 HP to 312. Nothing was changed except the car was certified at 312. So in reality they both have the same HP, one was just certified higher to compete on paper with the mustang..

ZL1 will go from 580 to 604 or something like that. But have no actual change, just certification.

Just my opinion of course.

Wasn't the ZL1 already SAE certified at 580?
