I'm really disappointed from the camaro lap time in Nurburgring!!!
Chevrolet Camaro SS laps the 'Ring in... 8:20
In this automotive day and age, any vehicle that has even a trace amount of performance in its DNA has to make the rounds around the Nurburgring. The new Chevy Camaro SS isn't exempt. So after GM revealed the Camaro on Monday, one of the scribes at InsideLine ran up to an engineer to find out what kind of time the Camaro put down at the Nordschleife. According to Doug Houlihan, GM's chief engineer for global rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the Camaro SS ran the 'Ring in 8:20. To put that into perspective, the recently released 2008 Cobalt SS did the deed in 8:22, along with the BMW E46 M3 and the last generation BMW M Coupe, followed by the Lotus Exige S and Porsche Cayman S at 8:25. Ed Welburn, GM'S veep of global design, concedes that the Camaro's shape is merely adequate from an aerodynamic standpoint, with a coefficient of drag on the SS of 0.35 and on the LS/LT models of 0.36 – largely a result of the recessed headlamps and full-width grille. Houlihan went on to say that their time at the 'Ring allowed them to dial in the steering response and suspension settings, and that the StabiliTrak traction control system on the Camaro will be the best GM can offer. Settings on the SS model allow drivers to choose between track and performance modes, along with completely disabling the system. A launch control feature will also be available on the SS. source ::autoblog SO GUYS WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT !! |

what miracle of modern science were you hoping for from a 422hp car? were you expecting a 7minute time, maybe? can you find a car in the 7 minute time range that costs the same as a Camaro SS? can you find a car that weighs as much as the Camaro SS and does the time faster? I'm betting you can't, but I'll give you the chance to prove yourself smarter than the average engineer or journalist.
in this day and age where the Nissan GTR runs the 'Ring in just under 7.5minutes, we've become numb to the speed it takes to get around Nurburgring... did I mention that the STARTING price of a GTR is over $70k and that its got over 500hp at the crank? I know they say it has less, but they're fibbing and everyone knows it. were you expecting to beat the FASTEST front wheel drive car to ever lap the 'Ring? because, ya know, they did beat that car by 2 seconds... and, for the record, that car has a 260hp turbocharged I4 in it with, if memory serves me correctly, ALOT shorter gears in it... so we're not exactly fighting fair here, now are we? but wait, it STILL beat that 8:22 time by 2 seconds... so, again, I ask you, "what were you expecting?" I swear, GM is going to have to come out with a 550hp Z28 that does the 'Ring in 7:52 or less or every keyboard bench racer on the planet is going to hate on this car... I can't believe how insane this is getting. and while I'm griping in this thread, mods, either delete it or move it to the 5th gen General Discussion forum... we're not discussing the powertrain here, we're discussing the performance of the car... which has no business in the Engine Discussion area.

I don't believe the lap was an all out lap, I believe it was more of a shakedown lap to test the car.

Since I will never drive that course in ANYTHING those times mean nothing to me, What does mean something to me is the feeling I get when I get behind the wheel and the enjoyment I get when driving. I have been in some cars that were turtles by today's standards, but they were so much fun to drive. then I have been in some cars that were very fast, SCARY FAST, but they were not fun at all...
(psst, and remember the car they ran was also a pre production model, not necessarly what they will be selling, not until an actual production car gets to be tested will we have a better idea of what it can do..)

Personally, I don't expect Camaro to perform like a supercar and post up crazy lap time at Nurburgring track.
Its because Camaro is American muscle car with 6.0L 3,800 Ib more suitable for straight line, and Nurburgring is race track with TURNS. For the money and price range, I bet Camaro can burn anyone in straight line.. By the way, earlier in this post, someone mentioned about GT-R, lets not talk about GT-R. Its $70,000 that can hang with + $1,000,000 Ferrari Enzo. Top Gear: The Stig's Track Times 1. 1:17.3 -- Ascari A10 2. 1:17.6 -- Koenigsegg CCX 3. 1:18.4 -- Pagani Zonda F 4. 1:18.9 -- Maserati MC12 5. 1:19.0 -- Ferrari Enzo 6. 1:19.5 -- Ariel Atom 2 300 ** 7. 1:19.7 -- Nissan GT-R ** 8. 1:19.7 -- Ferrari 430 Scuderia 9. 1:19.8 -- Porsche Carrera GT |

I personally am THRILLED that the SS can run the ring in 8:20. But honestly, the ring BS needs to stop. /rant off |

Was this with optimum conditions? Professional driver, dry track, and a proper tune?

this has been thoroughly discussed in another thread...
this lap time means nothing...and you can't expect them to get down into the 7s with the front end looking the way it does, unless they up the HP. 8 mins of driving is a pretty long window of time for the slightest of mistakes to make a difference (sec wise). and it's a human driver who isn't going to drive like the next driver let alone do it consistently every time. even with all that said, it's still in really good company. especially considering the affordable sports car market it's in
