Key Release

Hi All,

My 2010 SS has a problem. Sometimes I stop put the Transmission in PARK make sure the break is on and turn the key off and the car will not allow the key go in the off position and I can not get it out. I have been carrying 2 keys so I can lock the door. All the electronics stay on and it will drain the btry overnight. Any suggestions??

Chris

Bad tumblers would be my guess. Just replace the ignition.

Is the steering wheel locked whenever the key will not come out?

My kid called me in a panic recently: He could not remove the key from the ignition, and couldn't turn the key either. I instructed him to give the steering wheel some muscle, and try the key again. He thinks that I am a car god.

Another possibility: When my battery went south, one of the first symptoms I found was that the key would not release from the ignition. Replaced the battery, haven't had the key problem since. Is your battery still at 100% functionality? If it's original in your 2010, the time is coming very soon... if it's a reasonably new bat, then your problem is probably elsewhere...

+1 this happens to me if I park with the wheel turned. I just have to turn the wheel a bit until it's off the lock and it works

I have a newer btry. It charges and holds a charge. I think if that was the problem, hooking it up to a charger would fix it. It doesn't.

Is the key still stuck ? If so read your owners manual , there is a key release in the steering column for when they get stuck . Then I would take it to a dealer and get it fixed .

Sounds like your neutral safety switch. Try slamming it into park as hard as you can and see if that works...

i had this problem after i took shifter apart, to remedy it i would pop/flick the shift knob button im guessing i did not seat it properly after paint and shifter boot install. if it quiet enough you can hear it engage then turn key back to off position

If it happens and I have time i will make a video
