sorry if this has already been asked- but I think I read somewhere that you have to sand part of the dash inserts with 300 grain sand paper and put a haze on it afterwards with 800 grain? is this correct? and is it just the part where the tube sits? thanks!

I have everything needed for this mod for sale:
- 2 of the Red GM replacement ABL bulbs ($37.54) - 2 of the acrylic light tubes from Digi-key ($38.35) I was going to install them but have decided to go a different route. Please PM if interested in the parts! I paid $75.89 for the parts. Will sell for $50 + postage! |

I popped off the fuse panel and inserts. I gotta say...this is going to be a pretty easy dash install. I don't think it should take that long at all either.

Guy's I got all my parts today and tried the install everything was going fine but when I slided the tubes in
it left a big gap on the left side of the speedo and to the right it really does not light up that well so I I shaved some paint off with a blade and it lights up a little better ( I shaved a edge down to keep my line stright and as the edge came down I was slowly taking off some paint) and it looks ok but all the way to the right where the tube need the end it falls down to a slope and the lighting is fading so I have to problems 1. the small piece ( to the left of the speedo) has a gap 2. Keeping the light tube in place to the far right please help

I think what most of us didn't understand in the begining was what the parts actually looked like. (maybe someone can take good pictures of all the parts before you install them) Seems the light source (part from GM) looks like a little gun with the colored LED light inside and a connector on the end to plug into the sockets in the dash. The light tube is basically a 5mm thick fiber optic clear flexable stick. When you attach the light tube to the end of the light source and turn on the light source it shines the light down the tube and the whole tube glows the color of the LED. And since the light tube is just a piece of plastic you can cut it to any length. So like described above, you do cut the light tube to length for each side of the dash. Stick the light source on to the end. Place it in the dash as described and plug it in. I'm ordering the parts as soon as they are available. I'm definetly doing this mod. Only part that scares me is pulling all the pieces off the dash without breaking them.

you can diy on the light tube..i looked it up on youtube a while ago and done it myself..using two led lights and a clear hexagon shaped miniblind rod..looks absolutely amazingly bright..anyway im getting my door panel inserts and the dash insert done in green leather.will i be able to add the ambient lighting without ordering new inserts???or could i just put the light behind those..the way ive seen it the others are acrylic and im guessing that the light comes from behind the inseart by way of the clear acrylic..so i wouldnt be albe to use mine correct??? mines 1lt btw.

Hey so where's everyone's pictures of the finished deal??? Or doesn't it work? And has anyone figured out why GM didn't do it themselves if it's so easy?

I finished mine last night and it looks factory to me! Went to take pictures and my camera went dead Will post some tonight when it gets dark It was a bit of a pain in the butt to get it looking good all the way across but worth the time. My total time for the dash not including the doors was about 4 hours. The trick is in the sanding. I have one door to left to do but I might take apart the other door again and do a little sanding on them because the dash is actually brighter than the doors right now.

It tough to get a good picture, but you get the idea. The break in light on the right side is from my daughters babyshoes I hang from the mirror. I guess I should of moved them for the pic
