So I got it installed today and I have to say, it seems to be really lacking bass. I wonder if the tech turned the gain down to help protect from damaging the BA speakers? Or maybe to help convince me that I need to get a sub? The sound was a lot cleaner, I'm just a bit...underwhelmed. Thoughts?

Just FYI. Most local shops will overprice subwoofers from my experience. I work in a place that sells all types of subwoofers. Basically they are sold for twice as much as what we get them for. I went to a local shop, and they charged even MORE for the subwoofers than where I work. My advice, check out crutchfield.com. I've found the best prices from the sales they have there. I've also had good experience from them having two subs go bad on me; they replaced both almost a year after purchase overnight.

The guy in the shop said he would recommend against using the stock space for a replacement 10. I guess because it would need a box to sound good.

I don't know how big the factory box is but your could get a shallow mount sub, JL makes an awesome sub. I bought all my stuff off of amazon. They beat everyone's price by far.

I would check the gain for the sub first. I've got mine turned up about 3/4.

The gain isn't a volume knob. People tend to drive subwoofers into clipping to get their desired volume when they aren't familiar with it ... I'd recommend just grabbing a Digital Multi Meter and measuring your voltage. Quick, easy, quantifiable.

That isn't to say you can't set it by ear ... just that when someone is going into a situation that they're unsatisfied with their SPL and haven't set gains before, they tend to crank it.

I have to turn the bass all the way up in the HU to even hear anything, no exaggeration. I think they just have it set to low. I don't want to blow the speakers so I'll have to incrementally test it. I'm not just gonna turn it up to 11.

With the 700/5 the sub should be on a seperate chanel. You should be able to set the gain on the sub without messing with the other speakers.

So I made the change and I'm not too impressed. I think I just need to upgrade the speakers on it and call it a day. I ordered some C5s for the front and looking for a good 300w free air 10 to put in the stock spot. Any suggestions?

The only free air sub I've tried was a Kicker, but that was a long time ago.
