Why do you want to change the thermostat to 160? The engine is designed to run at 190 to get the best combustion, leave it alone, it won't improve your performance. Haven't you noticed how rough your car runs until it warms up properly? If you want to do something with cooling, have the fan turn on temp dropped by 20 degrees.

Changed out mine to a 160. Now runs at 10 0r 11 degrees cooler than the 192 it ran before.

Yep... that's what a 160 deg Tstat will do... question is, why did you do it...

yeah, on a stock motor and stock tune, unless you live in a really HOT climate, no reason to do it. If you do live in a HOT climate, you should also get a tune to turn your fans on at a lower temp.
To answer the question...unbolt the thermostat housing...(located at the end of the upper radiator hose...get ready for a lot of coolant to drain out)...remove and replace. Refill radiator, purge the system, done.

Correct return the 160 and get your money back. These engines need to be at the 190 to perform there best.

Not really. Running a bit cooler will let you pull a bit
more timing without knock. It won't hurt to run a cooler thermostat, but it's just going to be open constantly without having the fans set. |

I just installed TSP full exhaust and CAI on my L99 Camaro..i literally just got home from the dyno from having it retuned for the new parts. the first pull after the initial tuning yielded 362.2 hp with the car at normal temp operating range. the dyno session sheet says temp was 191 @ the beginning of the pull, and 194 at the end...with the fans blowing on it for a few minutes, it cooled to 178 at the start of the pull and was up to 180 by the end ..the tune was not modified at all and the car made 368.8hp on the cooler run...the 3rd pull back around the 190 mark was again down in the lower 360 range... it is my belief that it will help to run a cooler thermostat BUT, I think a 170 or 180 would be a better choice if it is available...a 160 will stay open constantly and struggle to keep the engine that cool in very hot weather..you could be looking at overheating problems if the water continuously cycles through the system because the thermostat never closes any..the coolant wont run slow enough through the radiator to cool down, especially at slower speeds with minimal amounts of airflow through the radiator. ive had it happen...less chances of this being a problem with a 170 or 180..I don't think it is a lost cause trying to cool it down a little, but my results may not be typical.. |

i had similar results on my last dyno run's... as far as a cooler thermostat the car has a 186 in it stock so a 180 or 170 wont do anything, but like the guy said earlier a 160 will have you run about ten degrees cooler. if the car is your DD then im not sure if you should run a 160 but if its a track car or weekend car the a 160 would be good.
