track day brake pad upgrade over oem pads

I'm looking for some experiences from other drivers that have upgraded from stock pads to something else. I've got a track day one month from now, and I'm looking to find something a little better on the track. Searching the internet/forum yielded many different opinions, but nothing I could find was in relation to the stockers.

I have no concern of squealing brakes as the pads will be used for the track only. I've only done a couple track days with the stock pads - in my unexperienced opinion they weren't that great once they got up to temperature.

I was thinking of doing Hawk DTC-30 front/HP Plus rear. Is this a significant bump in capability? I had concerns about the high end of the spectrum DTC-70 as it sounds like they will chew through rotors pretty quickly. I don't do track days frequently enough to have dedicated rotors or desire replacing them anytime soon.

In the end I guess entry level to midrange track pads is what I'm after as long as they don't cause other (severe) mechanical wear/require other supporting upgrades.

Did you get rid of the DOT 3 fluid and replace with 4?

I track monthly and I am using stock pads. I did upgrade the fluid and change it after track day. I do not get any brake fad. I am also an instructor and I have seen people upgrade pads and have worse performance. The other thing you should do is add a separate clutch reservoir get our clutch fluid to be isolated.

Yes, brake fluid has been flushed with DOT 4 before every track day. In the past it was ATE TYP200, this time I will be doing Motul RBF600.

You're going to get 100 different answers. I use Powerstop Track Day pads. They're loud as hell but worked great on my 1LE. No fade, very consistent. The part numbers for a ZL-1 are PST 1405 front and PST 1053 rear.

Cobalt XR1 fronts and XR3 rears.....bleed the system with a good brake fluid such as Motul 600 or Castrol SRF.. We ran our ZL1 at Circuit of the America's in Austin for 3 days an I never once had to touch the brake system on the car all weekend long.

I have a 2013 with 20K miles and about 40 laps around COTA on it. How much life can I expect out of the stock rotors and pads? Looking at doing another track day in October and wondering if I need to change the pads / rotors or both beforehand. The brakes felt good on my last track day and still do for daily driving. Definitely could smell them at the track though.

I'm in the same situation. I have an 14 with 20k and was just at Harris hill and was paranoid of fade/failure bc I didn't feel as confident with my brakes for this second time going to Harris hill. It may just be my paranoia but I'm switching out my pads to DTC 60s before COTA bc I don't want to go into a wall bc of my brakes. Where you going to in October?

Most likely MSR or cresson sometime soon in the future. Have a credit with edge addicts but not enough for another run at COTA, but will have to see how it goes and may fall in love with it.

Is it OK to just swap out pads for a day at the track? Does it affect rotors at all? Any bedding procedure that needs to be done when the pads are swapped out and back?

Hi 2013zl1guy,
How did your ATE TYP 200 DOT 4 fluid performed at track? How many liters do you need for a full change?
