How bad is AFM?

So im looking to upgrade to a SS and i cant decide if i want an ls3 or l99 ... Ive been researching the pros n cons of the 2 and i guess the main thing that people complain about the l99 is the annoying sound that comes from the AFM. How bad is it?? And another thing i guess i dont like is the unpredictability of it? What triggers it to turn on??

Btw not looking to get a tune to disable afm

The best thing you can do is go test drive the L99. Your opinion is the one that counts.

Will you be keeping it totally stock. If so, no problem

Will you be tuning, if so, no problem, just turn AFM off. (loss of warranty)

Will you be adding aftermarket exhuast. Be carefull with your choices. Plenty of good info here. This is where most of the people who complain made a mistake.

Steady RPMs trigger it to come on and save gas. Any variation w/ the gas pedal will go back to 8.

I wouldn't want a stick as a daily driver, if I had to be in a lot of stop and go traffic every day.

One thing that should be said is that every car is just a little bit different. Mine kicks in and out fine only tell is the drone. A buddy has the same car and his jerks and the entire car shudders when it kicks in. If you read enough around here you will see the same thing.

Mine was okay before I went with a different exhaust, but then it was amplified and it was horrible. I was embaressed. Mine was an automatic though. I understand it to be different on a manual. Test drove a new 2012 and could not hear it, barely felt it.

Every L99 is slightly different as far as AFM goes it seems. For some cars it is barely noticable. I dont notice it on the highway but in town, in the 30 to 50 mph range it bugs the heck out of me.

Thanks for the input! Exhaust and CAI are probably the only 2 mods i would consider... Is there a specific exhaust that helps with the drone?

It's a lot different on the LS3, primarily because it's not installed on the LS3......it's a full time V8 and sounds like a NASCAR (ok...slight exaggeration)

I tried the L99, I wasnt impressed with it when I test drove one and punched it. I felt that the power was not there. I mean I expected to be blown away when I hit the gas with 400HP at the throttle and thats when I said LS3 is for ME!When you nail it, you FEEL it stock. Thats what sold me. I agree it can be a PIA when you're stuck in 1hr traffic. But to me the fun is when you're DRIVING it, not just sitting in it and holding a wheel.

Main question is do you want stick or auto?

If auto then will you keep the stock exhaust?

If stock, you don't notice AFM, at least on the other vehicles I've driven with it. Just hear the difference with an open exhaust.

I had a L99 for six months and traded for LS3. Should have got the LS3
to begin with. But to each their own. Just my .02.Good luck with your decision.
