Fuel Guage on E despite having 3 gallons left?

I just used up my first tank of gas in my new camaro, went to fill her up and she wouldn't take more than 16.2 gallons out of the 19 she holds. The guage was on E and the estimated fuel range had been displaying low fuel range for the past 15 miles.

Will the fuel guage actually go below the E if it's dangerously close to running out of fuel?

That's normal, my guess is that the leftover gas is for cooling the pump and cya. The fuel pump uses actual fuel to cool itself.

Every car I've owned indicated Empty and had a few gal left.

It's a good idea to never let is go below E, over time, you'll get trash that settles to the bottom of the tank and it's not good for the pump and/or it clogs the filter quicker

Thats normal for almost every car. If there wasn't a drop of fuel left when the needle hit the "E", there would be a lot of stranded people on the side of the road. It varies from car to car but there is typically 2-3 Gallons left once your on the "E".

Does this upset you? If you were a good driver, you should know when you're going to need gas by how much you've driven... and not have to rely on electronic devices. I'd rather have 3 gallons left while on E then have it go bone dry once it hits E. Some people don't even know what an oil change is. Do yourself a favor and fill up the tank when you get a chance, after you hit the 1/4 full mark.

Also the gasoline keeps the fuel pump cool so it's not a good idea to run bone dry can burn out your fuel pump. On both of my Chevy's I keep at least half a tank at all times.

ya, several years ago my dads car read 0 miles till empty one day when we were running really late on the way to the airport and didn't have time to fill up. Well, we made it the 40 miles or so the the airport, so i don't trust those thing to be too precise.

Stories exactly like that are the reason there's a few extra gallons in the tank when it shows "E". Who said car makers cant do anything right??? LOL!

3/4 = You should top it off
1/2 = Fill up now before your wallet rebels
1/4 = Don't go on any road trips
1/8 = Are you trying to end up on the side of the road?
E = Idiot light (here's your sign!)
