If you know who did it I'm wondering why you're "looking into" a civil suit?

A friend and I window chalked his truck. That's it, and honestly, I expected retaliation (in the form of window chalk!), but damage to my car in unacceptable.

I am pressing charges for Criminal Mischief.

I think it was cocoa powder and Vaseline, not 100% sure, but the powder did scratch the paint.

Do you have evidence? You won't win if you don't have proof that he did it. I would just break his face and call it even

No one cares about your car, but you. I am sure that person didn't think twice about messing with your car.

Unless you can prove that person did the damage then you are our of luck. And to do that you would have to implicate yourself for criminal mischief too...

Whew. Tough call. If I had started it, I'd have a tough time pressing charges. These things do tend to escalate, unfortunately. Odds are the prankster didn't realize his version would do real damage. A lot of us here have a different standard of expectations than other vehicle's owners when it comes to appearance. I'm sorry for your damage and hope you get it resolved. I'd just have a tough time turning it in if you guys are friends on some level. Sounds like a truce is in order. Charges will not start one of those.

Best of luck to you OP. Hope it looks like new soon. :(

That's why I never mess with people's stuff...it's all fun n games until somebody gets hurt. What he did definitely crossed the line, but the chalk thing shouldn't have been done to begin with...especially since you have a nice car. Anyways hopefully you guys can figure something out

In that case, you started it all when you chalked his truck. You knew there would be retaliation, and there was.

Call a truce and move on.

We've been window chalking each others cars for 3 years now... all in good fun until this.

...and I do have proof. I have text messages and a witness, the charges are filed.
