The correct response would have been to immediately get out of your truck, walk to his license plate and write it down (AND MAKE SURE he see's you writing it down, or taking a picture of it.)

Then call 911. That is what I would do.

I would say some guy just dented my car and I want to make sure he fixes it and make sure he has insurance. If he doesn't, usually the cop will give THEM a ticket.

Optional: Take a video or picture of the guy as evidence as to who was driving the car when they hit your car.

In theory this also would look like a "hit and run".

But if he TRULY was a scary person, then it may be best to NEVER park in an actual parking space.

ALWAYS PARK in such a way that no car can actually park beside you. Or park a mile away INCLUDING AT 4:00AM at McDonalds.

ALWAYS park where you truly feel NO ONE would want to park near you.

That's what I do. I don't mind walking 500 feet.

that is 500 feet away from the complete PSYCHO you saw that morning.

and that's the real reason you should park far away also.

It's not just because of dents.

This is the route I would have taken also.

Glad to hear you were okay, also glad to hear it wasn't your Camaro!

Sorry to hear that happened.

But... Tustin police couldn't do anything when I got shot in the neck on the freeway, I doubt you would've had better luck.

Call 911 over a door ding...and calling it a hit and run...seriously? The police have much better things to do than respond to that non-emergency and they won't even fill out a report for damage under $250...so good luck with that one!

The OP did the right thing and lived to tell the story because of it.

All correct except for two things, call dispatch and not 911, and it would be considered damage to private property not a traffic accident

A door ding can easily be more than $250, depending on how hard it was hit.

I got one on my crease very recently, have not gotten the estimate yet, but the paint came off on it. I talked to a reputable shop about another spot on my car. From that experience I'm assuming that when I talk to him about my door ding we'll be looking at around $1000 considering they'll have to repaint most or all of the door. And it's not that easy either. They'll either not paint the whole door and fade on the door, or paint the whole door and do the fading on the fenders which will probably cost more.

Every state has different laws. Here that I guess could be considered a leaving the scene. You'd have to get the license plate and a good description. If properly registered police could find the owner of the car eventually... Finding them with the dude who did it would be slim.

Here our dispatch has call takers than dispatchers. So it takes a good 5 min or so for us to even get the call. Unless it's insanely seriouse then we get half has info (had a robbery of a damn dollar store last night shift. We just got the robbery call. Then a few min later they added the gun part. My lt got on scene and have us suspect/vehicle info)

If that dude is that shady and that dumb they'll get caught doing something.
