ZL1 Rear Differential Failure!

I was supposed to pick up my 2012 Ashen Gray ZL1 at my dealership today at 5pm after PDI. As part of the PDI, a technician who I respect, took the car for a short test drive to make sure everything was perfect. I got a call from my service manager saying that the rear end is bad and whining distinctively at low speeds. They have ordered a whole new rear end to be Fed-exed tomorrow and hopefully installed by tomorrow night.

Of course I am really upset and want to get your opinions on what this really means since I am not a technician. Will the car be the same after a complete rear end replacement? Does this mean I have received a lemon? Was this an assembly line error or was it just a defective major part? By the way, it sat in QC for 4 weeks with the others.

You will be fine. It could have been a defective part or even a bolt or something wasn't torqued. It makes you wonder if any others will have issues. It will technically be better than new

Nothing to be worried about. Parts are bad sometimes.

I would not worry they will take care of you. I had a tremec speed got out at 170miles in my 08 C6.

granted it sucks cause you want the car right now I am sure.

I was thinking the same thing, but these rearends are supposed to be indestructable. Probably just a rare bad part.

First thing that crossed my mind as well. Check out the rear quarters for stone nicks.

Did they check the rear differential fluid level?

BINGO!

I wouldn't jump to conclusions. At least they caught it now rather than after you already had your car. You'd be even more unhappy.

Just saying with all the tests we've seen it would be extremely hard to break a brand new differential that is in perfect working order (properly filled with correct fluid).

I'm with most everyone else. I wouldn't sweat it, these things happen, I know it's not as large of a part, but I had to get my battery replaced under warranty on my 2010 SS when it only had a few thousand miles on it. Never had a problem other than that in the 2 yrs I had it.

At least it sounds like they are on it quick. Are they replacing the entire rear end or just the gears?

mcamisgroup, I'm sorry to see this happen to such a new vehicle. Glad to see the dealer is on top of things and I hope you can enjoy your ZL1 from here on out. Let us know how things go for you.
